Ruel Merrill - Private
|
Ruel was my Great, Great, Great uncle, being one of 6 Merrill brothers from Windsor Maine who served in the Civil War, all surviving, including my Great, Great grandfather, Leonard Merrill, of the 2nd ME Cavalry.
I believe Ruel might have been a pioneer from this regiment. He was injured when felling trees between Williamsburg and Whitehouse Landing about May 7, 1862. Though seriously injured, he continued to serve until mustered out with the regiment. In 'Maine at Gettysburg', he is shown on detached service during the battle, I believe as an ambulance corps driver.

Charles F. Snell - Corporal
|
Charles F. Snell was born in Dedham, Massachusetts in 1843. He moved to Bath, Maine in 1860 to live with his brother George F. Snell. His brother's wife had died leaving him a widower with an infant daughter and George and Charles' mother Mary had left Massachusetts to aid George in raising the baby. Charles joined them in Bath. At the age of 18, Charles enlisted with the 3rd Maine on 24 Apr 1861 as a private. He was promoted to corporal. He was captured during the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864 and spent more than a year in Rebel prisons: Andersonville and the Florence Stockade. He survived, but his constitution was severely damaged. He settled in Boston and became a respected optician. He married and sired four children. He died in 1881 of consumption.
