Walter Simon Turner - Private   
My great-grandfather, Walter S. Turner, served in the 39th Mississippi Infantry Regiment as a young enlisted man during the Civil War. He was 20 years old at the time of the Battle of Port Hudson, LA which he described in detail in his diary covering the period of May 21-July 25, 1863 (a copy of which I hold). After the surrender of the Confederates on July 8 , he was parolled on July 14, 1863. He died at Winona, MS on February 21, 1920 at age 76.

S.A.'Shade' Thames is my direct paternal GGGGrandfather.
He died December 11,1873 at the age of 34 years old, leaving wife and 8 children, from leg wound he received in the Battle of Atlanta. It is my belief he was wounded at the Battle of Allatoona Pass October 5,1864. He was parole from Allatoona, according to Application to Pension for Widows, on November 8,1864. He is buried in the Thames Cemetery in Simpson County,Mississippi.

Mar 29, 1839 – Mar 17, 1899. Born Rankin County Mississippi, had a light complexion, dark hair, grey eyes, and stood 5’ 9”. Enlisted Mar 16, 1862 near Brandon MS. He was appointed to adjutant on Oct 20, 1862. He was captured at Port Hudson on July 9, 1863 and sent to New Orleans on the steamer Suffolk on Jul 14, 1863 and arrived on Jul 16, 1863. On Sep 13, 1863 sent to Fort Columbus, New York Harbor and then on Sep 21, 1863 sent to Johnson's Island ear Sandusky Oh. He was transferred to Point Lookout Md on Mar 21, 1865 for exchange. He was received at Fort Delaware on Apr 28, 1865 from Point Lookout. He took the oath at Fort Delaware and was released on Jun 12, 1865.

This is my great grandfather who also had 3 brothers---Issac Ezekiel, Thomas Jefferson, and William---all in Co C, 39th Miss Inf. Thomas J. applied for pension in 1912 and indicated severely wounded at Pine Mountain while in 20th Miss. Issac E. was captured at Port Hudson and sent to Johnsons Island, Ohio--died in Texas in 1911, CT died in Tx in 1917, and TJ died about 1912 or 1913 in Scott Co, Miss. William just disappeared.

Family history unknown. Please message me w/any info! Possibly born 1829-1830 in GA, maybe NC. Married Lucretia Banks and moved to Scott Co, MS. 4 children.

Enlisted on May 6, 1862 in Jackson, MS by Capt. Collum for 3 years. Private in C Co. of 39th MS Volunteers. Captured at Port Hudson, LA on July 9, 1863 and released on July 12 or 13, 1863. Captured by 23rd A.C. Dept. Ohio near Jonesboro, GA on Sept. 5, 1864 and turned over to Army of the Cumberland on Sept. 8, 1864. Prisoner in Nashville, TN and transferred to Louisville, KY in Oct. 1864. Sent to Camp Douglas, IL where he died between March 1st and March 15th, 1865, buried in Grave #938 in Block 3, Chicago City Cemetery.

Henry was my great-great-grandfather. He served in Company E, also known as Barry's Guards, from January 1862 until the close of the war. He married Delilah Beasley in December 1857 and together on their farm they raised 13 children. Henry died on Christmas Day 1907 and is buried in Old Gallilee Cemetery in Copiah County.

Abraham was about 25 years old from Simpson County Mississippi. He has 13 cards in his archival file. Some report him as AWOl when he was a POW. Enlisted 30 April 1862. Captured at Port Hudson La. 9 July 1863. Paroled and rejoined his unit which surrendered at Citronelle, 19 May 1865. His first wife Dicy Brown was my 2nd cousin 4 x removed. She died in 1859. He then remarried a Elizabeth Gardner. Only one son was born to him. His name was Jefferson Davis Brown born 1861.

Rausel Crisenberry Presley - Private   
Rausel Crisenberry Presley joined Co. I, 39th Mississippi Infantry when he was 17 years old in November 1864. In his old age, R.C. lived at the Confederate Soldiers Home at Beauvoir on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Upon his death July 7, 1937, he was buried in the Confederate Cemetery there. R.C. had two older brothers that also served in the Civil War. Brother Elias H. Presley was a member of the 2nd Arkansas Infantry, and brother Andrew J. Presley was a member of the 33rd Mississippi Infantry.

George was born 19 Jul 1832 in Elbert Co. Georgia. The 1860 census has him as 28 y/o in Hinds Co. Miss. the Post Office is at Terry. He enlists on 29 April 1862 at Jackson, Miss. for 3 years. Enlisted by W.E. Ross. He served until the end of the war. Surrendering at Citronelle and paroled at Jackson Miss. 19 May 1865. Battles: Vicksburg, Nashville and Atlanta Campaigns. When it was formed the Regiment was unarmed except for 41 men armed with flint-lock muskets. We are related by a distant marriage. He died at Bolton, Hines Co. Miss in 1919 and is buried in the Salmon Cem, Raymond, Hines Co. Mis.
