My grandfather was badly wounded and left among the dead but survived and became a police sgt. in Boston. I have his rifle and Civil war discharge. He had a close friend Charles Whitney who also survied the war. I have photos of both. My grandfather joined up July 26, 1862 and was discharged June 1865. I havn't been able to find his name on any Ohio listings?

Horace L. Reed - 1st Lieutenant
|
Not a relative, but I possess his membership medal from the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the U.S. (MOLLUS). Reed enlisted in the 104th in August 1862. He was promoted through the ranks, ending up as a 1st Lt. in August 1864. He was wounded in the assault on Fort Anderson, NC on 18 February 1865, and was discharged for wounds on 15 May 1865.
'[Attempting to flank Fort Anderson], the aggressive [Gen.] Jacob Cox pushed his command around Orton Pond... Lieutenant Horace Reed of Company I led his party along the banks of the causeway under sharp fire from dismounted Confederate cavalrymen.... When he felt he had amassed a large enough force, Lt. Reed ordered a bayonet charge against the dug-in Southerners. The Ohioans responded with enthusiasm, driving [the rebels] out of their works.... Reed, who had so well organized the crossing and assault, collapsed with wounds in both legs.' (Fonvielle, 'Fort Anderson: Battle for Wilmington' (1999).)
