Volunteered to help defend Washington in 1861 at 16 years old. With the 108th Ohio Infantry, took part in Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. Served directly under General Grant when Fort Fisher was captured, took part in General Sherman's march to the sea, and witnessed the surrender of General Lee. Joseph died in 1920.
