Company D
Thomas Jackson Pelfrey - Sergeant
Served in Companies, D,I,and K.
Pelfrey entered the service as a Private on November 1, 1862 and was mustered in on November 27th of that same year.
He skipped ranks a lot, sometimes being listed as 3rd Sgt, and others just as Sgt. (His headstone says Sgt)
He was promoted to Sergeant on May 18th, 1863, which is ironic because he asked for a 30-day furlough that same day, which was granted. The reason for the furlough was so Pelfrey could help attend to a sick family member.
Unit fought at some pretty important Tennessee battles. Spring Hill, Franklin, and Nashville, as well as participated in the Carolinas Campaign.
Pelfrey died on April 14, 1912 (no, he was not on the Titanic) and was buried in Smyrna Cemetery. He tombstone says '2nd buried' on it, which may be wrong because records say he was actually 3rd buried. He was born in Madisonville, Monroe, Tennesse, but lived most of his life in Rhea County, Tennessee (near Evensville).
While in the service, Pelfrey was said to be 26 years old, 6 ft 2 1/2 in, dark complexion, YELLOW eyes (this statement was proven true, as it was passed down through the generations), and black hair.
The spelling PELFREY varies greatly, and can sometimes be hard to trace.
