His paternal grandmother, Francis Isbell Land was a sister to my gr,gr,gr,grandfather James Linville Land. Probably served for a short time with the 3rd Texas Cavalry that mustered into Confederate service at Dallas on June 13, 1861. The unit was the first regiment of Texas volunteers to serve outside the state. Greer's troops participated in the Confederate victories at Wilson's Creek, Missouri, on August 10, 1861, and Chustenahlah, Indian Territory, on December 26, 1861. Dismounted in April 1862. Surrendered at Arkansas Post on Jan. 11, 1863. Exchanged in April 1863. The exchanged troops were consolidated with other cavalry and infantry troops and sent East of the Mississippi to fight in Polignac's Brigade
