Transferred from Company A, 9th Infantry Regiment Virginia to Salem Flying Light Artillery Regiment Virginia on 08 May 1862. POW in September 1862 at Hagerstown, MD. (According to ''Powhatan, Salem and Courtney Henrico Artillery'' by Richard L. Nicholas and Joseph Servis, the reason Samuel was captured was that he went back across enemy lines to retrieve Lieutenant Charles B. Griffin, who was sick and had somehow gotten left behind.) Exchanged on 06 October 1862 at Aiken''s Landing on the James River. (Sent home) Absent/sick in June 1863. (On Surgeon''s Certificate) Transferred to Company C, 2nd Virginia Cavalry in August 1863 in Fredericksburg, VA. Absent on horse detail for entire month of April 1864. POW on 24 May 1864 at Fort Kennon, VA. Confined in June 1864 at Fort Monroe, VA. (Held hostage for colored troops by order of Gen. Butler.) Confined in July 1864 at Point Lookout, MD. Exchanged on 06 March 1865. (Samuel was my great-great-grandfather.)
