Joseph Groff was a German immigrant enlisted in the 27th Infantry. It is unclear how he arrived in Michigan from Germany. He received a surgeon's discharge at Petersburg, VA and apparently moved to upstate New York.

Enlisted in Second Company Sharpshooters on March 14, 1864 at Boston, Michigan for 3 years age 19. Discharged to accept promotion to 2nd Lt. on June 10, 1864. Deafened at Bethesda Church, Va. due to cannonading. Discharged for disability on Dec. 10, 1864. Died on Nov. 17, 1886 at Pontiac, MI.

Enlisted at age 18 at Marquette, MI. Sent to Vicksburg, 1862 to participate in the seige. At Petersburg, he rescued his Colonel, William B. Wright, in the face of intense firing, by crawling on hands and knees. Also fought at Chickamauga Swamp, Cold Harbor, Spottsylvania Courthouse and the Battle of the Wilderness. Wounded at Spottsylvania Courthouse, but returned to duty in five weeks. Wounded a second time at the Battle of the Wilderness and captured by the Confederates. Imprisoned at Libby Prison (2 mo.) and transferred to Salesborough, N.C. (7 mo.). Paroled in 'hopeless' condition and sent to Annapolis to be hospitalized. Ultimately released and sent home. He later married, had 10 children and died on September 24, 1924.

Great Great Grandfather fought at Cold Harbor and was Wounded June 3, 1864, below the left knee by a mini ball. He joined at age 38 with his Son-In-Law Jerome White out of Marquett Mich He died in Elk Point South Dakota in 1881. I am looking for any info on the War Flag they Carried and Photos of the 27th company B.

Mr. Richard Pearsall was born in 1845. He enlisted on November 20, 1863 at Duplain, Michigan. Mr. Pearsall died on June 5, 1864 at Cold Harbor, Virginia.

Cemetery headstone in Mason, Michigan but probably buried in the field near City Point, Virginia. He died in August 1864, two weeks before his brother Melvin Fritz died from wounds suffered at Ream's Station, Virginia

David was the younger brother of my 3rd-great-grandfather, Benjamin Henry Kimball. Together these men, along with a neighbor, Orson Otis Kimball, made their way from Brooks Twp., Newaygo Co., Michigan to Grand Rapids, Kent Co., Michigan to look for work. Not finding any, they signed up with the Union Army.

Farley was my gg-grandfather born in New York May 16th, 1836. Was reported missing or imprisoned at Weldon Railroad, VA after the battle of Globes Tavern. He resided in Ionia County, MI. Buried in Keefer Olmstead Cemetery Ionia County. Death in 1882. Looking for any records or family that may have information.

Enlisted CO H, 27th Infantry 26 Mar 1864 at Portland, MI for 3 years, age 18. Mustered into service 14 April 1864. Mustered out of service at Delaney House, D.C., 26 July 1865. From the Michigan Library and Historical Center.

At age 19, he enlisted in Company I, 27th Infantry on 30 Nov 1863 at Bingham, Clinton County, Michigan for 3 years. He was mustered in on December 29, 1863 and was mustered out at Delaney House, D.C. 26 July 1863. Discharged for disability at Georgetown, DC on 6 May 1865. Louis and his brother William Wallace served in the same company.

According to John Beaver''s discharge papers in my possession, he enlisted 21 December 1863 and was assigned to Captain Israel P. Whitmer''s Company K. He was discharged 26 July 1865. John Beaver was 19 years old at the time of his discharge. He died 24 January 1919 in Fort Dodge, Ford Co., Kansas. He is buried in Jetmore Cemetery, Jetmore, Hodgeman County, Kansas.

I was recently going through some family papers and, coupled with some on-line research, found that my great, great grandfather, Henry A. Clow, at age 19, enlisted in January 4, 1864, and mustered out on July 26, 1865. He married and had two children by his first wife, one of which was my great grandmother on my mother's side. He was a blacksmith and ran a general store in Sumner, MI. I found a newspaper clipping from 1921 that mentioned his 'distinctive service' during the Civil War, but I don't know to what that refers, nor do I know his rank other than I found his name in a roster in the enlisted section.

Full Pension Records in possession. Blinded in Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse. Joined at age 18 from Hillsdale, MI.
