I have about 12 letters he sent from Hospital No. 13 in Nashville TN between October '64-January '65 (during battles of Franklin and Nashville. Another g-g-grandfather serving was Phillip Gehres.

29 Feb 1864 he enlisted as a private in Co. 'I', 41st OVI. The regiment was on leave and recruiting to replace troops lost since unit inception 3 years earlier. On 27 May 1864 he was killed at Battle of Pickett's Mill, GA.
B: 1847 Port Clinton, Ottawa Co., OH He was probably under age for military service.
D: 27 May 1864
Burial: 'UNK'
He had been related by marriage to Pvt. Joseph M Bell of same company.

Joseph Bell died of disease in Sep 1862 and originally buried in Nashville City Cemetery. Later removed to National Military Cemetery at Nashville. 41st Ohio lost nearly half of its total losses for the Civil War at the Battle of Shiloh(Apr 6/7 1862).

William D Gill was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh, TN and died two weeks later in Evansville, IN. He is buried in Port Clinton, OH. I sent for and received his war records a few years ago.
