David Burk - Private
|
He fought with the 14th throughout the early part of the war. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer, and was transferred to teamster duties for the Atlanta Campaign and Sherman's March to the Sea. His pension application states that, during the latter, he suffered a back injury while lifting a bale of hay. Illiterate at the time of the war, upon his return he courted and married a school teacher from Tuscarawas County, Ohio named Mary Metcalf who taught him to read. They had an enormous number of children together.
