Not a relative but I had a piston with his name on it

John was born in Darlington Co. SC 11 April 1837. He was about 25 y/o when he enlisted in Capt A. H Boykin's Co Mounted Rangers. He has 19 cards in his archival file. Other than being present the following is noted. June 1863 he is at Recruiting Camp: Oct 1863 he is in hospital. [no reason stated ] 29 Nov 1863 he is on 40 day sick furlough. Captured at Florence, SC on 5 March 1865 and sent to Point Lookout, Md. He is released 24 June 1865 after swallowing the yellow dog. He died 22 March 1910 and is buried beside his wife Emma Susan Burch.

Boykin's Mounted Rangers He has 16 cards in his archival file. 25 May 1862 he is sick in hospital at Richmond. 10 June 1862 he is sent home sick by the surgeon. June of 1863 he is sent home to find a horse. 24 Feb 1864 he is on a 5 day leave, 26 August he is in the hospital. His Regiment fought in Sharpsburg, Fredricksburg, Brandy Station, Bristo Campaign, Mine Run, Hartwood Church and others. He was my 3red cousin 4 x removed.

Sebrey was born in Darlington Co. SC 22 Feb 1839. He was about 21 y/o when he enlisted 26 June 1861 in Co A 2nd SC Cavalry [ Boykin's Mounted Rangers ] for the war. He has 17 cards in his archival file. Present thru out the war. 26 May he is sent to the hospital in Richmond, reason not stated. June 1863 he is paid $48.80 cents for the use of his horse. He married 3 times and died 22 Feb 1912 and is buried at Mount Hope Cem. in Florence, Florrence Co. SC.

John was 30 years old when he enlisted 17 Mar 1862 in Darlington District SC . This was a consolidated Cavalry unit consisting of Hampton's Legion, 4th Battalion, Capt's Boykin's & Lipcomb's Companies. The South was running out of manpower. He was taken prisoner at Whitehall, NC and sent to Lookout Point, Md. He was released after swallowing the 'Yellow Dog' on 21 June 1865. He is distantly related to me by marriage.

Born in Beaufort SC in 1836. Enlisted into the 9th South Carolina Volunteers Co.E as Corporal. When unit entered Confederate Service was redesignated as the 11th South Carolina Infantry Regiment. Transfered into Hamptons Legion Cavalry Battalion. Hamptons Cavalry Battn was later redesignated as the 2nd South Carolina Cavalry Regiment. He was in Company-B. Huger with his brother William were both one of the famed 'Iron Scouts' of Hampton. The regiment brought to Virginia, Huger and his brother William continued their scouting in Northern Virginia frequently working side by side with Col John S Mosby, the 'Grey Ghost of the Confederacy'.
In December 1862 during a scouting mission near Centerville Va in Prince William County his scouting party was ambushed by Federal Cavalry hidden in waiting beside a church. Huger was killed and left laying in the road. Local citizens with permission of the Federal officer in charge there retrieved the body and buried him in their local church yard.

Transfered into Hamptons Legion Cavalry Battalion and promoted to Sergeant. Hamptons Cavalry Battn was later redesignated as the 2nd South Carolina Cavalry Regiment. He was in Company-B. He lead the first scouting assignment ordered by Gen Wade Hampton. William was a noted scout with daring abilities and one of the famed 'Iron Scouts' of Hampton. The regiment brought to Virginia, William and his brother Huger continued their scouting in Northern Virginia frequently working side by side with Col John S Mosby, the 'Grey Ghost of the Confederacy'. William was later wounded at the Battle of Brandy Station Va. promoted to Lieutenant he continued his service as his regiment was sent into North Carolina then southward. He surrendered and was paroled on April 16th 1865 in Augusta Ga. Died in 1917 in St.Augustine Fla.

2nd Great Grandfather

Erskine College (SC) senior in Apr '61. Enlisted in 7th SC Inf and served in VA, but reenlisted for the Cav in Apr '62 and joined troop G (Bonham's Light Dragoons), 2DSCC. Served mostly with the 'Iron Scouts' while in VA, but was with the Regt in MD and PA for all invasions and Cav raids. Rotated back to SC/NC coast with the Regt in May '64. Shown as 'present' on last avail Regt muster roll in Dec 64...but--like most of the scouts--does not seem to appear to be on a surrender roll anywhere. Later Abbeville District planter, SC legislator, engineer, and educator (Orig Life Trustee at Clemson College). Died in 1907. (Grandfather of USAF 4-star GEN Mark Edward Bradley, 1907-1999.)
