1st Alabama Cavalry

He signed up as a 2d Lt on Nov 14, 1861 and was elected 1st Lt on 15 Dec 1861. It appears that he resigned in June of 62. Died 1 May 1863

1836-1919

Born 1831 Pickens Co SC ,married 1850 Shelby Co Al Mary Roper died 1895 Jefferson Co Al., he and wife buried Providence Methodist Church Cemetery at New Castle near Pinson ,Jefferson Co Al Served CSA in 1st Al Calvary. He is my g-great grandfather.

Thomas was 21 when he joined Co.B 1st Battalion Alabama Partisan Rangers at Caperton's Ferry on 15 July 1861. This unit became Co.A 18th Battalion Tenn. Cavalry [Gibson's]. He was promoted to to 4th Corporal on 1 April 1863 and to 1st Sergt. on 1 Aug. 1863 per order of Col.Adams. He was wounded and sent to hospital 27 May 1864. Retutned to duty 25 July 1864. The remarks card for this company is quite lengthy but states that it was designated as Co H. Forrest's Regiment Tenn. Cavalry. He was captured and sent to Camp Chase , Ohio. Released 13 June 1865 after swallowing the yellow dog.

Thomas Jackson Weeks, ironically, was from a line of Yankee ancestors in New York State that were some of the original settlers of Long Island. However, he was born in Mississippi and settled in Cullman County, Alabama where he joined the Confederate Army there in August 1862 at Mount Tabor Church. He was wounded at Middleton, Tennessee, I presume on retreat from the Murfreesboro/Stones River campaign, and was honorably discharged in the spring of 1865. He collected a pension from the State of Alabama for his service and lived out his days in Hanceville, Alabama as a farmer with a large family from whom I am a descendant.

At 46 Kinchen Nichols enlisted in Co. E 1st ALA Calvary 0n 28 Aug1862 at Troy, AL. On 30April 1863 he was transfered to Co. D,2nd GA Sharpshooters. Wounded at Pickets Mill,near Dallas, Ga. In the Battle for Atlanta 27 May 1864.He suffered a head wound and a severe wound to his hand. Tranfered to Invalid Corps CSA, Montgomery. Pardoned 17 Jun 1865 and sent home. His wife died 3 days after he returned. There was a lot of smallpox in that area during that time. Kinchen died 1n 1877 while trying to save his son in the Conecuh River near Troy, AL. His 2nd wife Martha then moved to the Hephzibah Community in Pike Co. AL.

David Richard Parker was in the 53rd Ala Calvery which was a new unit made uo 1st Ala Cav. He was born 1840 Died 11 Oct,1862 in Dale Co while home on furlough.

Lemuel Parker Jr. was a member of 53th Alabama Partisan Rangers. I believe the were formed from the 1st Alabama Calvery. Born 25 Sep 1835 in Henry or Butts Co. GA. Died 19 July 1908 in Sweetwater,Nolan Co.TX buried in Sweetwater Cem. Sweetwater, TX. Lemuel moved with his mother and father from Ga. to Russell Co. AL in 1839 then to Dale Co. AL in 1851. He then moved to Sweetwater in the 1870's. His wife was Nancy Jane Godwin. Lemuel was a very prosperous farmer. Lemuel's children were Beulah Belle, Lena, Louella A., Eilsworth Lile(Buddy), Jonana, Callie, Charles, Lemuel Jackson, Cadmus(Cad). ....

Little is known served Co.G First Regiment Alabama Volunteers{known as the Alabama Calvary}.He died Feb.15th,1862 while in service from complications resulting from the measles.He was my GG Grandfather.Any info. would be great.He was 36 yearsold at time of inlistment.

Born 23 Aug 1836 • Tishamingo County, Mississippi to Samuel and Rebecca Lumley. His family relocated to Winston Co., AL and homestead land in 1859. Stoax married to Eliza Hopper on 16 Sep 1855 in Marion Co., AL. He enlisted on 10th of Oct 1863 at Glendale, Mississippi, Company H, 1st Alabama Calvary. Stoax died who of Typhoid Fever & Pneumonia on the 25th day of Aug 1865 near Moulton, Ala. He was a Scout and apparently was erroneously reported as a deserter according to his wife's Pension Application. It was the recommendation of his Comd'y Officer restored to duty without trial and with out loss of pay or allowance (signed) Command of Maj. Genl. Rousseau. In or about 18 Sep 1864, Col. Doolittle requested Stoax's services due to his knowledge of the county, from 1st LT George W Emerick. The following afternoon 1st LT George W Emerick were attacked by Hoods' Rebel Army and Spain escaped to the mountains for a while. He then later at the head of 25 mounted Union men that and made himself the terror of the Rebel Calvary. At one time he charged into Jasper the county town of Walker capturing 75 Rebel Calvary from Jasper, capturing nearly all their horses and arms, and was able to released all the Union Soldiers held there. He was dropped from the rolls as a deserter October 1864 by Capt Ford as he didnt know circumstances that Emerick knew. Lt. Col Emerick goes on to say in letter, instead of him being referred to as a deserter, with loss of pay and his good name, He should be rewarded for his great work for the Union. I have never located his burial site other that the info in the Pension Record of his wife that indicates near Mooresville, AL. His wife Eliza Hopper Spain never married again and she died in Winston County at the original homestead location on 29 Aug 1930

Birdwell was born 15 Jul 1845 and died 25 Sep 1923. He is buried in Johnson Cemetery #4 in Limestone, Co. Alabama.

Thomas was born 22 Oct 1842 in Butler County, Ala. He has 7 items in his archival file. He enlisted in Nov 1861 when the unit was formed at Montgomery, Ala. During his tour of duty, his company designation changed thru consolidations from Co I, to Co. A too 2nd Co B. He saw action from Shiloh thru the Atlanta Campaign and Carolina Campaign. His last fight was at Bentonville, SC. Battles: Shiloh, Boonville, Blackland, Perryville, Stones River, Duck River, Chickamauga, Clinton, Knoxville, Mossy Creek and many skirmishes. A true Southern Patriot of whom I am very proud. He married Isabella Hartin. He died 8 Dec 1912 in Honoraville, Crenshaw Co. Ala. in Union Cem. in that town. He was the father-in-Law of my 2nd cousin 3 x removed

He enlisted 30 April 1861 in Montgomery, AL by Capt. Clanton for a period of 12 months and was elected 1st Lieutenant on Nov 15, 1861. This company subsequently became (1st) Company K, 1st Regiment Alabama Cavalry. It was consolidated with (1st) Company H to form (2d). According to a correspondents typewritten report of “OPERATIONS OF THE CAVALRY IN TENNESSEE, REAR GUARD, WHEELER’S BRIGADE, PICKETT POST, NEAR MURFEESBORO, TENN., "Lieutenants G. S. Allen and Dever of Capt. Hodgson’s squadron are killed" in an attack on 31 Dec 1862.
