2nd Alabama Cavalry

Henry Clay wrote that his unit escorted Jefferson Davis into Georgia where they were paid 21 Mexican silver dollars. They proceeded to Forsth, Ga. Buried their arms in the woods, surrendered and were paroled to go home with their horses. He still had the $21 in 1911.(?).

Allen Cost was enlisted on September 8, 1862 and was captured at Lost Mtn , Georgia and sent to Rock Island Ill. prison camp June 15, 1864was released on June 22, 1865. He died in Talladaga county AL 1873

James Cost enlisted with his 2 brothers Allen and Henry on September 8, 1862. He was ill and in the hospital and was given a certificate of disability in January 1863. He lived his life in Shelby county AL and died October 2, 1888 and is buried in Pelham AL city cemetery

enlisted in 1863, served under Capt. John B. Haney, recieved Confederate pension in George County, Ms., no cemetery named.

Pvt. James A. Gould (1828 - 1905) enlisted on 16 MAR 1862 at Montevallo, Alabama. Days later in Montgomery, Alabama he was Mustered into the 2nd Cavalry Alabama, Company 'B' on 21 MAR 1862, where according to his Confederate service records, he was issued his Horse and Cavalry Equipment. He deployed with the 2nd Alabama Cavalry in April 1862 to Pensacola, FL. at Camp Lee, Santa Rosa Island (adjacent to Ft. Pickens) where they remained until May 16, 1862 when Pensacola was evacuated. He then moved with the 2nd Alabama Cavalry to Camp Lee, Pollard, Alabama from May 1862 until March 1863. In April 1863 he was listed as being on detached service and deployed into Northern, Mississippi with Brig. General Daniel Ruggles where he fought the Battle of 'Mud Creek' where the 2nd Cavalry Alabama lost 8 men. In Oct 1863 on Detached Service with General Samuel Wragg Ferguson`s Brigade, he fought at Okolona, Ms. against forces of Union General Grierson. On January 1, 1864 he was listed as being Wounded at French`s Division Hospital in Shelby Springs, AL. A few months later on March 30, 1864 he was listed again as being on indefinite detached Service with General Samuel Wragg Ferguson`s Brigade, with whom he would serve and fight for the remainder of the War. In April 1864 he was deployed to Resaca, Georgia to initiate the Atlanta / Dalton Campaign. During that Campaign he fought the Battles of Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain, New Hope Church, Peach Tree Creek, Ezra Church and the Battle of Atlanta. On 2 SEP immediately following the fall of Atlanta, James A. Gould was part of a small detachment of General Samuel Wragg Ferguson`s Brigade who pursued, fought and harrassed the rear of Union General William Tecumseh Shermans forces on his famous 'March from Atlanta to the Sea' Campaign and followed him into North Carolina where they were soon diverted to rendevous with and Escort President Jefferson Davis from harms way in North Carolina to safety in Georgia towards the end of the war in April 1865 where the Detachment soon disbanded as the War ended. After the War Pvt. James A. Gould was paroled on May 25, 1865 in Talladega, AL.

William joined Capt West's Co Alabama Cavalry at Montgomery Ala. and mustered in the same day 21 March 1862. By Major J.L Calhoun. His horse is valued at $175.00. He was discharged by substitution of E Coston 29 August 1862. His brother in law John D. McMath was his company.

Richard Oliver is my great great grandfather.

Born in Bavaria, Germany around 1825, immigrated to the United States, New Orleans 1836, both parents died from yellow fever, was adopted by the Peter Stauber family and trained to be a Tin Smith. Moved to Green County Alabama under the name of George Storter. He married in 1857 and fathered five children prior to the Civil War.Enlisted in the 2nd Ala. Cav. and was promoted to the Rank Of Sgt. He surrender at Forsyth, Georgia.His wife and 3 of his children died during the war. In 1870 he and his sons,George&Bembry moved to Florida and became one of the pioneer families of Collier County. He refused to wear a blue suit, the rest of his life, preferring dark gray. Died June 10,1919. buried Ft.Myers cemetery, Lee County FLA. Life was chronicled in 'Collier County Last Frontier'

Daniel at age 26 enlisted at Tuscaloosa, Ala. on 3 Apr 1862 by Col. Jamison for 3 years. He is paid $35.60 cents for the use of his horse at rate of 40 cents per day. On May 1863 he provides a substitute for his company and transfers to Capt. Daniels Co I. He survived the invasion and died 12 Feb 1914 in Bibb County Ala. He drew a pension for his service. His wife was Elizabeth Matilda Thomas a distant cousin on my direct Thomas line.

John was 18 when he enlisted as Pvt. in Co D 2nd Regiment Alabama Cavalry. Enlisted at Tuscaloosa, Ala. on 3 May 1863. He serves a Courier for his unit. He is due his bounty and is paid $ 24.80 cents for the use of his horse. He survived the invasion and died 12 Apr 1921 in Cottondale, Tuscaloosa Ala.

Tenedus enlisted as a Pvt. on 11 May 1862 in Co. D 2nd Alabama Cavalry. Enlisting at 34 years old at Tallapoosa, Alabama. I June 1863 he is transferred to Capt. Williams Co. K. He was discharged later by reason of Substitution of W.C. Heflin.

He is buried in Poplar Creek Cemetery #1 in Limestone, Co. Alabama.

William was born in 1834 in Henry County Georgia. He has 11 cards in his archival file. He enlisted in Lowndes Co Ala. for 3 years on 25 April 1862 at age 29. Enlisted at Camp Stone and mustered the following day. He is paid 40 cents per day for the use of his horse. He sees action in the Dalton-Atlanta Campaign at Mud Creek. and at Okalona, Mississippi. Rides with General Nathan Bedford Forrest in harassing Sherman's army. He was seriously wounded and discharged 27 Aug 1864 and assigned to the Invalid Corps. Details of the injury and circumstances are unknown. We are related by a distant marriage..

Richardson was born in Georgia , came to Alabama and married Martha W Chapman. She later applied for a pension based on his service. He joined on 23 April 1862 Capt William P Ashley's Co of Cavelry in Coosa County. They mustered in on 30 April at Camp Store. This became Co G. 2nd Ala Cavalry. Other than being present for duty there is little information in his file. There are 105 cards re: Organization and after action reports for this unit.

Angus' name is spelled incorrectly, as Argus, in records. He was born in Georgia about 1834. Married Mary Barnett in Coosa Co, AL, in 185?. Enlisted in G company of 2nd AL, in March 1862, in Coosa Co. Last mentioned in service record as being in Selma, AL,to receive a clothing allowance, in May 1864. Brother-in-law, Thomas Barnett, and first cousin, James Roberson, were also in G Co. Believed paroled at Talladega, AL, with Thomas, in May 1865, but unproven. Lived in Coosa Co. until late 1870s. Moved to Franklin Co., AL. Last known whereabouts: sold land in Winston Co., AL, to a former brother-in-law, in 1885. Believed to haved moved to Indian Territory (Oklahoma) with second wife and two children, but it is unknown when/where he died. No record of a Confederate pension. He was a carpenter.

My g-g-grandfather. Correct name was James Kilpatrick but service records indicate he served as James K. Patrick. Two brothers-in-law, Elijah Smith and Newton J. Smith, served as Privates in the same company and regiment. Two other brothers-in-law, James Smith and Benjamin F. Smith, served as Privates in the 6th Alabama Cavalry and 18th Alabama Infantry respectively. All enlisted from Coosa Co., AL.

William was born 1820 in Wilkes County Georgia, the 1860 census finds him at age 34 in Coosa County, Alabama, the Post Office is at Mount Olive. He has 9 items in his archival file. He enlisted 26 March 1862 in Coosa County in Capt. William P Ashley's Cavalry Company. They mustered at Camp Stone 30 April 1862. They were first stationed for 10 months in West Florida. Ordered to North Mississippi under Gen. Ruggles and lost 8 men is a skirmish at Mud Creek. Then skirmished at Okalona. Then placed in General Furgerson's Brigade Then under General Wheeler, they skirmished and raided Sherman's rear and supply lines in the Dalton - Atlanta Campaign and followed Sherman into North Carolina. In the end were part of the escort for President Jefferson Davis where they were captured at Forsyth Co. Georgia. William died 16 Oct 1898 in Morris, Jefferson Co. Ala. and is buried in the Providence Methodist Church Cem. in Pinson in the aforementioned county. He is related thru a marriage on my Chapman line.
