9th Alabama Cavalry

Pvt. Frank Leslie Davidson, joined Goldsby's Company (Malone's) 9th. Alabama Cavalry. According to 'Selected Records of the War Department Relating to Confederate Prisoners of War 1816-1865' on August 29, 1864, Private Frank Leslie Davidson was captured by the Union during the siege at Fort Milton, Fl. He was received with a large number of others in New Orleans, Louisiana on September 11, 1864. Roll#598-3 and Folio #81 reveals that he was transferred to Ship Island, New York on November 5, 1864. He was received from Ship Island on November 16, 1864 and then transferred to Fort Columbus, Elmira, New York. 'The Register of Confederate Soldiers, Sailors and Citizens Who Died in Federal Prisons & Military Hospitals in the North 1861-1865' reveals on M3918-1 that Private Frank Leslie Davidson, # 1115, died of Typhoid and Pneumonia on December 15, 1864. He lays to rest in the Confederate Section, Site #1061 in the Woodlawn National Cemetery, located in Elmira, New York. My grandfather Frank Leslie Riley, Sr. and my Uncle Frank Leslie Riley, Jr. are honored with his name.

Andrew Jackson (A.J.) Sutherland served as a Pvt. in the Cavalry, Malone's 9th,in Alabama. Seeking more info about him and his regiment in AL, where they fought during Civil War. His brother, John Sutherland, also served with A.J. and in the same regiment enlisting in 1863 and A.J. enlisted in 1862 at Lebanon. They later lived in TN. Jean Shroyer

Originally mustered in Co. D 10th Miss Infantry Regulars in Mar 1861 as a PVT. Dismissed from service on 27 Mar 1862. Enlisted in the 7th Alabama Calvary Regiment (Malone's Co), later known as the 9th, on 12 Aug 1962 in Corinth, Alabama. Captured in Charlotte, NC on 04 May 1865 and sent to Camp Chase in Ohio until the end of the war.

My great grandfather, Alfred Edmund Brady, son of Cornelius Brady (1801-1877) and Elizabeth Owen, was born 28 November 1844 in Aston, Warwickshire, England and, against his parents wishes, emigrated from there to the United States- arriving aboard the packet ship 'UNDERWRITER' on 4 February 1861 at Castle Garden, Manhattan Island, New York, as a 16 year old boy- alone and with no family in this country. Four months later, on 8 June 1861, he was mustered in the Union army at Pendleton, Ohio, as a private, sent to camp Clay, Ohio, for training- and assigned to Company C 1st Kentucky Infantry Regiment. He remained with this same unit during all it's engagements in western Virginia (later, aka West Virginia), Kentucky and Tennessee. On 7 April 1862, he was wounded at the battle of Shiloh (Pittsburg Landing). The siege of Corinth followed in May. While near Athens, Limestone county, Alabama, in June 1862-- and for reasons unknown, he decided to take up the Confederate cause and joined James C. Malone's 14th Cavalry Battalion Partisan Rangers. On 15 April 1863, this unit was merged with Zachariah Thomason's 19th Cavalry Battalion Partisan Rangers to form the 7th Alabama Cavalry Regiment. On 15 September 1864, because there was also another 7th Alabama (Hodgson's) Cavalry Regiment, this 7th Regiment was redesignated as the 9th Alabama (Malone's) Cavalry Regiment- and remained unchanged for the duration of the war (also confusing, is that there was also another 9th Alabama (Livingston's) Cavalry Regiment),- continuing to fight in many battles- through Bentonville and the final surrender in North Carolina on 26 April 1865. Alfred E. Brady was serving as an Orderly Sergeant in Company C 9th Alabama Cavalry at war's end- and according to family history, never took a parole. He was wounded on at least 3 occasions- once quite seriously. In July 1865, he married Mary Josephine 'Mollie' Hollingsworth of Gadsden, Cherokee county, Alabama, who earlier had cared for his wounds in the home of her father, Thomas Hollingsworth. He was discharged at Oxford, Alabama, in October 1865. In 1867, they moved to Fayetteville (aka Lick Skillet), Fayette county, Texas, then several years later--to Maysfield, Milam county, Texas, where she later died in 1884. During their marriage, they had 8 children together. After her death, he remarried to widow Sarah Elizabeth Heifner (nee Thompson) and they also had 8 children together. A.E. Brady died on 20 November 1922 and is buried at Oak Hill cemetery in Cameron, Milam county, Texas. I am descended from his first marriage- through his daughter, Ida Lillian Brady (1874-1965)- through her son, Edmond Vincent Cole (1907- 1974).

He was born 12 Mar 1840 and died 21 May 1941. He is buried in Fielding Cemetery in Limestone, Co. Alabama.

Miles was born in Estill Springs, TN. He moved to Decatur, AL before the war with two of his brothers. Once the war started, his brother Thomas went home to Tennessee to enlist in the 18th Tn Infantry. His other brother, Jasper, fought with the 8th Alabama Cav, later, the 8th Confederate Cav. Miles was wounded Dec 12th, 1863.

Hugh was born @1836 and died 25 Sep 1885. He is buried in Adams Cemetery #1 in Limestone, Co. Alabama.

James Clark Patterson was born 18 Jan 1825 in Souh Carolina. He died on 29 Mar 1894 in Limestone Co., Alabama. He is buried in the Old Salem Cemetery located on the Salem/Minor Hill Rd, Salem, Alabama.

David Alexander Ridgeway is buried in Evans Cemetery, located in Limestone Co., Alabama. He was born 15 Jan 1839 in Tennessee and died 19 Mar 1917 in Limestone Co., Alabama. He was married to Elizabeth Ann Evans on 11 Oct. 1860.

He is buried in Legg Cemetery in Limestone, Co. Alabama.

My ancestor joined the 7thAL cav with his brothers, Edward Thompson and John Thompson in 1862. Later the 7th was converged into the 9th AL cav. Edward was captured in the battle of Shelbyville, TN and transferred to Fort Delaware where he died with approx 2500 Conf POWs & 500 Union guards in Sept. 1863. My gggfather Barzillia fought in the Battle of Lookout Mountain 'The Battle Above the Clouds' and numerous skrimishes in Sherman's march to the sea. Last battle was Kennesaw Mountain, and he was among the survivors when the Unit was captured in NC in 1865.
