John Dabney Palmer was about 15 years old when he joined his brother Luke in Co A 36th Alabama Infantry. His experiences parelle's his brothers experience. Having been captured the same day at Spanish Fort Ala.

Luke was 19 years old, enlisted 12 May 1862 at Mount Vernon, Sumter Co. Ala. when the 36th Ala. Infantry was formed. His records are scant but his regimental history provides great detail. In 1864 he is in Dalton Ga. 12 Oct 1864 he is on a hospital roll in Augusta Ga. 8 April he is Captured at Spanish Fort Ala. and transferred as POW to Ship Island then on to Vicksburg on 1 May 1865. His 15 year old brother John Dabney Palmer joined him at some point in 1862. They were with Stewart's Divisiom and say action in Chicamauga, Lookout Mountain, Mission Ridge,Crows Valley, Dalton, Rock Face,Rescan, New Hope, and Atlanta Ga. Jonesboro and Nashville. Finally going into Garrison duty at Spanish Fort Ala. Where they were captured and sent to Vicksburg on 1 May 1865. Both survived the war. They were my 6th cousins 3 x removed.

Served with the unit until the Battle of Atlanta where he was hit in the right thigh by a minnie ball which disable him for life. He was discharged on 22 July 1864. He filed for his first pension on 2 May 1889 in Tuscaloosa, AL.

Enlisted in 1861 as a private. Was originally from Greene County, MS but joined while living somewhere in Alabama. He was captured in 1864 during the Battle of Atlanta and transferred as a POW to Camp Chase POW camp in Columbus, Ohio. He died there on February 9th, 1865. His remains are interred in the confederate soldiers' graveyard there.

Obanyan Jacob Snider (1840-1878) listed as Jacob O'Banion and O. J. in his military records, Obanion Snider was enlisted at age 22, on 10 April 1862 in Co. F, 36 Alabama in Monroeville by Captain DeLoach. He was captured on 25 November 1863 at Missionary Ridge by Major General Thomas and forwarded to Captain S. E. Jones, Provost Marshal at Louisville, Ky, 6 December 1863. Roles of Prisoners of War transferred from Nashville, Tenn., to Louisville, Ky 7 Dec 1863. Snider was forwarded from Louisville, Ky to Rock Island, Ill., 7 Dec 1863, and received at Rock Island, Ill. from Louisville on 9 Dec 1863. He was later transferred from Rock Island to New Orleans for exchange to the Commissioner for Exchange, on 3 May 1865, by order of Major General E. R. S. Canby.

Edward Stacey, one of five brothers who served the 36th, was wounded and captured at Spanish Fort and sent to Ship Island. The others were John Adville Stacey, killed at Chickamauga, Thomas Stacey, wounded at Nashville, Monroe Stacey, wounded at New Hope Church and joined 42nd Ala. after recovery, and Harrison Stacey, captured at Atlanta and sent to Camp Chase.

There is but one card in Henry's file. He is from Monroe Co. Alabama. He was 19 years old when he enlisted on 17 March 1862. He survived the war and is buried in Brewton, Alabama. His unit was with Clanton's Brigade, Buckner's Corp. Stuarts Division. I have found two other family members in this Company.

John has but one card in his file..He enlisted on 19 April 1862 in Monroe County Ala. He was 27 years old and the father of three small boys. He was killed by the northern invaders in the battle at Chickamauga, Georgia on 11 Sept. 1863. He lies in an unmarked grave.

Stephen was from Monroe Co. Alabama. He was 47 years old when he joined Co G.36th Alabama Infantry. Enlisted 17 March 1862. He survived the war. Married twice but had no children. Buried at Friendship Baptist Church,Pine Apple, Wilcox Co. Alabama

William joined, and was stationed in Mobile, AL. He was discharged due to medical reasons by a surgeon.

Sgt Ezell was referred to as Lewis. He joined the Confederate Service 13 May 1862. While fighting during the Battle of Nashville, Tennessee, on 16 Dec 1864, he was captured. His capture description is as follows: Sargt in Company I, 36 regt. Ala Infantry, and being 5 ft. 7 inches and having blue eyes, light complexion, light hair, and age 38. Unionist transferred him to Military Prison Louisville, Kentucky about 16 Dec 1864, then transferred to Camp Chase, OH, and there discharged after 5 Jan 1865.

James was born in Wayne Co Mississippi in 1826. He has 2 cards and 2 documents in his archival file. He is listed on the 1860 census as 36 years old. He enlisted by Lt. James Banks in Wayne Co on 11 Feb 1863 in Capt. Matt Calvert's Co. He serves about 3 months before he is discharged by Surgeons Certificate on 17 March 1863 near Tullahoma Miss. He is suffering from bilateral hernias. He is described as follows: 40 years old, five feet five in height, blue eyes, fair complexion and grey hair. He died in 1885 in Chicora, Wayne County Miss. buried in the Chicora- Davis Cem in Wayne, Co.

John was born in 1824 in Greene County, Mississippi. He has 5 cards in his archival file. He enlisted when the regiment was formed at Mount Vernon in Sumter Co. Ala. on 1 May 1862. The company served in General Clayton & Holtzclaw's Brigade. He served in the Tullahoma Campaign, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain aka Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge, Crow Valley and Rock Face 7 - May 1864 in the Dalton area of the fight. Three days later on the 15th at Resaca he is shot in the left leg and taken as POW. He loses his leg which has to be amputated and dies on the 17th of May. He is buried in Resaca Confederate Cem. at that place in Gordon Co. Ga. Grave marked by a homemade gravestone. We are distantly related thru marriage. I salute his service.

Thomas M. Moses enlisted in Company K of the 36th Alabama Infantry Division when he was about 30 years old in probably Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. He was captured 15-May-1864 at Pettis Creek, which was probably in Georgia. He was then sent to Chattanooga, Tennessee where on 31-May-1864 he appeared on a roll of soldiers who signed an oath of allegiance. On this oath of allegiance record his place of residence was listed as Tuscaloosa County, Alabama and was described as having dark complexion with dark hair and brown eyes. He was 5 feet, 8 inches tall. He was sent from there to Nashville, Tennessee and on 3-Jun-1864 arrived at the prison in Louisville, Kentucky where he remained until 7-Jun-1864. He then appears on the Roll of Prisoners of War at Rock Island Barracks, Illinois on 24-Jun-1864, this roll states he was received on 9-Jun-1864. He remained as a prisoner at Rock Island until his death on 6-Mar-1865 when he died from an inflamed lung and was buried in grave number 1914. From his military records, it is apparent and noted several times that he refused to sign the oath of allegiance even though he appeared on one roll as having signed in Chattanooga. Had he signed the oath he would have been set free as long as he remained north of the Ohio River during the remainder of the war? Many of the prisoners at Rock Island who signed the oath were exchanged for Union prisoners or were sent to fight Indians in the West; Thomas Moses chose not to sign and eventually died for what he must have felt was a just cause. He was a prisoner of war from 15-May-1864 to 6-Mar-1865, nearly ten months. He was born about 1829 in AL. He married Dorcas Calfee (Caffee) 15-Aug-1852 in Bibb Co., AL. Children were: Matilda Elizabeth, Permelia, William, Richmond, and James Hosea Moses.
