'I Shall Remain Confederate'

Jefferson Alvis Fowler was one of 1750 Confederate soldiers killed in Battle of Franklin. Casualties of the day totaled 6252 for the Confederates and 2336 for the Union. Jefferson is believed to be buried near where he died. For the seven months from April 29 to Novemebr 29. 1864, Jeff kept a pocket-sized diary. After the war, the diary was given to his parents by another soldier. This diary is now in the possession of Lucien Fowler's offspring and has been transcribed in A Fowler Family, compiled by Mabel Gaye Phillips and Waldo E. Fowler.

Enlisted in Co. L, 3rd Arkansas Infantry, at Latonia, Arkansas, December 12, 1861, as a substitute for Corporal Columbus C. Wolfe; appointed fourth corporal, December 12, 1861; promoted third corporal, March 1, 1862; promoted second corporal, April 15, 1862; promoted first corporal, 1862; transferred to Co. A, 3rd Arkansas Infantry, September 25, 1862; killed in action in the Petersburg trenches, June 20, 1864; born in Mississippi, c1838; listed in Ashley county 1860 census; occupation farmer; brother of Private William C. Hannah.

Enlisted in Co. L, 3rd Arkansas Infantry, at Latonia, Arkansas, September 25, 1861; transferred to Co. A, 3rd Arkansas Infantry, September 25, 1862; paroled at Appomattox, Virginia, April 12, 1865; born in Mississippi, c1841; listed in Ashley county 1860 census; occupation farmer; brother of corporal John A. Hannah.

Died of pneumonia May 4, 1863 at Farmville, VA. Interment most likely at Farmville Confederate Cemetery. Son of John and Harriett Minshew. Resided in Barbour Co., AL prior to 1860. Relocated to Ashley Co., AR by 1860 census enumeration.

Born in Alabama in 1837.Enlisted 19 June 1861 in Berlin, Ashley Co., Arkansas. No record after 30 June 1863.

1840-1917

He lost both parents by age 10, raised by his maternal grandmother and uncle. Enlisted in Company C, 3d Arkansas at Monticello, Drew County, Arkansas on June 10, 1861. Fought at, and survived Bloody Lane at Antietam; Fredricksburg; and Devil's Den at Gettysburg, among others. Records from National Archives show he was granted leave January 15, 1864. Did not return to unit in March, reason unknown; but historical evidence reveals that by March, Arkansas and other Western States were cut off from the remainder of the south as Union controlled both sides of the Miss. River for 50-100 miles inland of both banks, as well as having more than 16,000 Union troops garrisoned in Arkansas. Travel by Confederate soldiers became extremely difficult and dangerous. Traveling in uniform would result in immediate capture or arrest. Traveling in civilian clothes would mean summary execution as a spy. Dropped from the rolls in Aug 1864.

My GG GrandUncle was severly wounded at the Sharpsburg (Antietam) battle. At bloody lane, he was shot in the left eye and hip. I am very suprised he survived the ordeal considering he was captured and sent to Fort McHenry with terrible injuries. He was later released from the Union POW camp and sent back to Arkansas. There he was discharged due to his wounds. He died on 19 Apr 1901 at LaRue,Henderson, Texas.

Enlisted in Company C, Arkansas 3rd Infantry Regiment. Corporal. Company C — 'The Confederate Stars', commanded by Captain Thomas M. Whittington, organized at Monticello, Drew County. During its four years of service, 154 men served in Company C, only thirteen of them remained when the company was surrendered at Appomattox Court House. Fought at Antietam, Gettysburg, Chickamauga, Cold Harbor and the Wilderness.

E, 3rd Arkansas Infantry, at Champagnolle, Arkansas, June 20, 1861; promoted fifth sergeant, January 1862; promoted fourth sergeant; wounded at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 2, 1863; wounded at the Wilderness, Virginia, May 6, 1864; wounded in the left ankle at White Oak Swamp, Virginia, August 16, 1864; wounded on Darbytown Road, Virginia, October 7, 1864; promoted third sergeant; paroled at Appomattox, Virginia, April 12, 1865; born in Alabama, January 17, 1840; died in Arkansas, April 7, 1932; buried in Liberty Baptist Cemetery, Union county, Arkansas; filed Arkansas pension application #23524 from Union county, August 21, 1914; bought land in Union county in 1889.

4th grt uncle. Killed in action, on July 2nd 1863. Devils Den. Gettysburg.

Joined 20 Jun 1861 at Rockport, Ark for 'the war'.He was mustered in 5 Jul 1861 at Lynchburg, VA and elected 1st Lt. Co 'F'(Capt Newman's Company). Listed as 40 yrs of age at enrollment he was wounded at Battle of Antietam. Resigned 28 Mar 1863 when younger man promoted over him to captaincy.

Discharged Jan. 20, 1862 for disability.

William Henry Dumas First joined 2nd Battalion, Company C, Arkansas Infantry. The “Fagan Rifles”. This battalion was raised as reinforcements for the 1st Arkansas Infantry but was nearly annihilated when it led the assault at Mechanicsville. The survivors made up company G of the 3rd Arkansas Infantry. Of the 127 men who joined this company, only 23 remained at Appomattox.

Did Robert later join the Calvary and die at Nashville in 6 June 1865

He enlisted in Quachita Co., Ark. Private and listed sometimes as Sargent was 50 years old when he received his shots in Petersburg, Va. was in hospital at Farmville, Va. Aug 22, 1863 He was under Capt. Smith and Capt. Rust Appreciate any information.

Elijah had missing fingers on one hand from injuries suffered in the war.

This is my great grandfather. He fought in 7 days battle and was wounded in hand and head. Was shot in leg at battle of Chickamauga. Went to hospital in Montgomery and then to Atlanta.

William was born in Aug 1844 in Richmond County, North Carolina. In 1860 he is 16 years old and living in Bear House Twp, Drew Co. Arkansas. He enlists at Hamburg Ark. on 15 Feb 1863 enlisted by Capt William K Wilkins for the war. He was involved in several skirmishes in and around Somerton and Edenton Roads Va. in April of 1863. He was wounded by gunfire during the Gettysburg Campaign - 3 June - 1 Aug 1863. He is admitted to the CSA hospital at Charlottesville, Va. on 17 July for gunshot wound. He is transferred with other wounded to Lynchburg on 6 Aug 1863. He apparently recovered and rejoined his Regiment as he is found on a List of POW's dated 9 April 1865 at Appomattox, Va. There is some confusion as to whether he married and where and when he died.
