4th Arkansas Infantry

1837-1902

Asher Walker enlisted 17 Aguust 1861 at Mt. Vernon, MO. He served as teamster for his unit until his capture 22 December 1863 in Roling, MS. He was sent to Camp Douglas, IL 7 Nov 1864, and was exchanged 4 May 1865 at New Orleans.

maternal great-grandfather - his daughter, Edna Zanell(sp?) married her Husband Marshall Mason Scott in Okolona AR and had two children: Sally Wanda (1919-1995) and James Spence 'Abe' (1923?-1998). Sally married William Wilson Andrews (of Alabama) in 1945 in Belton TX and has two children: John Scott (1947-) and William Spencer (1950-) Edna died in Nashville AR in 1977 and Marshall died in Nashville AR in 1980. Both are buried in Merrill Cemetery in Belton AR (as are Sally and James),

Isaac Denton Shields was my great great grandfather, enlisted with the 4th Ark infantry and according to the book by Gammage (surgeon of the 4th) fought in every major battle that the regiment participated in during the war. After what remained of the regiment was surrendered with General Joseph Johnston's army after the Battle of Bentonville, in NC, he went home to Hempstead county Arkansas and lived until Dec.of 1911, having 19 children by two wives. He is buried there in a cemetery in Hempstead county, not far from his home town Washington Ark. Interestingly, he was born in March of 1834 in Cumberland KY, a triplet, and with his family moved to Washington Ark. One of his triplet brothers died at the age of 10. His remaining twin brother like he, enlisted in the Confederate Army (Charles S. Shields), in the 24th Ark. infantry regiment in June of 1862 and unfortunately died in camp of illness on Oct 2, 1862 in Jefferson Co. Ark and is buried in the local Confederate Cemetery there.

Williams, John W. Sgt - Enl 17 Aug 1861 at a camp near Mt Vernon, MO. Furloughed 5 Oct 1861-1 Mar 1862. Captured 4 Jan 1863 at Murfreesboro, TN and sent to MP at Camp Butler, IL 11 Mar 1863. Detailed as provost guard 25 Dec 1863. At hospital 19 Aug 1864.

Robert Bogle traveled 300 miles on foot from Montgomery Co., AR to enlist at Miller's Springs, MO, 17 Aug 1861. Released from hospital and honorably discharged because of injury to foot, rheumatism. Captured 28 July 1864 on the White River in AR and sent to Military Prison at Alton, IL 26 Nov. 1864. Robert died in 1866, not long after returning from the war, possibly as a result of some illness contracted while in prison.

William M. Stewart was born in 1841 in White County, Tennessee to William and Nancy (Cooley) Stewart. William enlisted in Company G, 4th Arkansas Infantry, August 17, 1861 near Mt. Vernon, Missouri.

Isaac had 3 brothers and an uncle in the Confederate Army, John Gabriel, (4th Arkansas), Spear Fort, (15th Northwest Arkansas), and David Hamilton, (24th Arkansas), Uncle Allen Kuykendall, (21st Texas Infantry). He also had 5 brothers-in-law serving; John R, Joseph, and Thomas Coin, (34th Georgia), James Coin, (1st Kentucky Cavalry), and Samuel Jasper Crossno, (9th Missouri). He was discharged from the 4th Arkansas in Nov of 1862

John Gabriel Kuykendall had 3 brothers, (Spear Fort, David Hamilton, and Isaac Kuykendall), an Uncle, (Allen Kuykendall), and 5 brothers-in-law, (James, John R, Thomas, and Joseph Coin, and Samuel Jasper Crossno), to serve in the Confederate Army.

Richard C. Cheek of Company I, 4th Arkansas Infantry is my 3rd great uncle.

I would be grateful if anyone could tell me how or where he died.

Obediah's records are provided at Film number M376 roll 19, Civil War Soldier & Sailors System (http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/) as Obadiah. He was killed on July 1, 1862 by a bum shell. Obie was one of my cousins. He was the son of Nathaniel Columbus L. Reed - brother to my GGGrandfather, Leroy Reed (on my father's maternal side).

William A. Cook was born in 1840 in Monroe County Al, and moved with his family to Calhoun County, Arkansas. He was living there when the war started. He enlisted on February 26, 1862 at Camp Boston Mountain, ARK by Capt W.J. Ferguson. The Regt participated in the battles of Elkhorn Tavern (Pea Ridge),the Kentucky Campaign, Stones River,Chickamauga, the Atlanta Campaign, Hood's Tennessee Campaign, and surrendered at Bentonsville, NC with Gen Joseph Johnston. William Cook's records show he was detailed to an artillery battery possibly the 1st Ark Battery, but the identity of the unit is in question. He stated that he was wounded at Chickamauga. After the war he married Martha and moved to San Angelo, Tx in 1897. He later was a resident of the TX State Confederate Soldiers Home in Austin. He was one of the last residents there, dying in 1941. He nad his wife Martha are buried in the Confederate soldiers section of the Texas State Cemetery in Austin.

Isaac Perry Haynes was my great,great grandaddy.I know He was wounded at Chickamagua,Georgia and was possibly captured at Murfreesboro,Tennessee.If you have any information about him,or any of his relatives and their service & activities,please relay it to me. Thanks, Doyle doyleo@fhtm.us

At the outbreak of the war he enlisted in Company K, Fourth Arkansas Infantry, and was in the battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas. He was sick for some six months, mostly in the hospital at Memphis; he joined the regiment at West Point, Mississippi, and was in the battles of Richmond, Kentucky, Murfreesboro, and down through the Georgia campaign. He surrendered with General Johnson at Greensboro, North Carolina. He was wounded at the battle of Chickamauga, at Peach Tree, Georgia, and again while on his way to meet a cavalry raid at Lovejoy Station. July 3, 1865, he returned home, after making a short visit to friends in Georgia, and began farming on his father`s farm; he was almost destitute on his arrival in Arkansas.
