At age 18 on April 1, 1863,Edmund Volunteered with the 9th Indiana Infantry. Co.H. for three months. On May 24, 1861, Edmund contracted measles and returned to duty May, 27. He was mustered out, July 29, 1861,in Indianapolis, Indiana. Edmund reenlisted Aug. 27, 1861, back into the 9th infantry for three years and went to western Virginia. On the 10th of Oct. 1861, Edmund developed protracted pneumonia. After a fatiguing march over the mountians from Camp Elk Water to Cheat Mountain Summit, a distance of ten miles. All of this long march was done in a terible rain and sleet storm upon Cheat Mountain Summit, during which the troops had no tents or other shelter. This storm commenced on the evening of the 26th of Sept. 1861 and continued for 48 consecutive hours. One man and 32 animals died of exposure of the elements and there was great suffering among all the men. With no time to recuperate, the men fought in the Battle of Greenbrier on Oct, 3th and 4th of 1861. Edmund was discharged from the unit on Nov. 16,1861, on a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability. On March 12, 1862, Edmund and his father John G. volunteered for the 20th Indiana Infantry, Co. I. On July 2, 1862,(his father was killed at the Battle of Spotsylvania May 12, 1864) after the seven day war, Edmund went to the Hospital. On Sept.10, 1862 he was discharged. Following that stint, on August 24,1863, Edmund with his brother Sumner T. volunteered for the 7th. Indiana Cavalry, Co. A. Edmund enlisted as a sergeant and promoted to 1st. sergeant on promotion of Charles H. Gleason to 2nd. Lieutenant. On Feb. 22, 1864, at the a battle near Okolona, Mississippi, near sundown, the 7th was ordered to charge. During the charge Edmund's horse was killed and while he was down, a rebel soldier struck at his head with the butt of a musket, he threw his head back and caught the blow on the left side of his chest breaking his ribs.He was also shot in the left little finger and grazed two places on his left leg.August of 1864 he was transferred to Co. C. same regiment.August 9 ,1865, Edmund was admitted to the U.S. Hospital Steamer D.A.January. August 18, 1865, transferred to the U.S.General Hospital at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, with enteric fever.Nov. 9, 1865, he was transferred to Marine General Hospital, at St. Louis Missouri. Edmund was returned to duty on Dec. 13, 1865. In New Orleans, LA. Jan.7, 1866, Edmund was discharged from service by special order No. 7. Edmund passed away August 31, 1891, in New York City.
