John Marlow was wounded in Tennessee,Battle of Stone River,discharged March 13,1863 in Louisville, Kentucky. He died at his home in Peru, Miami County, Indiana on November 2, 1863 of his wound to the left side of body.

Luther I Baker, was from Jay Co., Indiana. He ended up near Sawtelle, California. He is buried at Mountain View Cemetery, Altadena, Calif. He was with the 39th/ 8th Indiana Cavalry through it''s entire history.

By letter from Lieutenant Clark, we learned the part borne by the Jay County boys in the great battle of Shiloh. They were in the thickest of the fight for 2 1/2 hours and during that time, the Rebels commenced their retreat. They fought bravely and well, though it was the first battle they had ever engaged in. It was a trying time to their nerve and courage. For nearly 2 days the battle had raged most furiously and more than half that time the Rebels had driven our men. The boys heard the cannonading from the opening roar and had seen hundreds of wounded and dying borne from the field. In these circumstances they were called into the field and placed in the center. It was marching into the jaws of death. But they went forward boldly and fought well. All honor to them. Jay County is proud of her soldiers. James was mortally wounded and died at the residence of his brother at Windsor, Randolph County, June 18, 1862.

William Locke was born in Coshocton county, Ohio July 5, 1830 and died Nov ember 21, 1909 at Newton, Harvey county, Kansas. In August of 1861 he responded to the call of his country for defenders, enlisting in Company 'I', 39th Indiana Infantry, in which he served the full term of three years attaining to the rank of Sergeant. He was in the battles of Shiloh and Chickamauga and fortunately escaped without injury. At the expiration of his term of enlistment in the army he was honorably discharged from the service and took up his residence in Centerville, Iowa, to care for his widowed mother, his father having but a few months previously surrendered his life in defense of his county's flag.
