Silas (1838-1920) and brothers John and Charles all originally from Switzerland County, Indiana, served in various Indiana units during the War. Silas served three months from May 27, 1862 with the 54th Indiana Infantry. He re-enlisted two more times in other Indiana units in 1863 and 1865. He migrated with his wife and children to Kansas sometime between 1870 and 1875. He is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Independence, Montgomery County, Kansas.

Expedition to the Arkansas Post, Ark., January 3-10, 1863. Assault and capture of Fort Hindman, Arkansas Post, January 10-11. Moved to Young's Point, La., January 15. Moved to Milliken's Bend, La., March 8. Operations from Milliken's Bend to New Carthage March 31- April 17. Movement on Bruinsburg and turning Grand Gulf April 25-30. Battle of Port Gibson May 1. Garrison at Raymond and escorting prisoners to Yazoo River May 12 to June 3.
