65th Indiana Infantry

At the age of eighteen he enlisted in the Union Army to serve three years. September 1, 1862, he was mustered as Commissary Sergeant in the Sixty-Fifth Regiment, Indiana Infantry, and continued as such until September, 1863, when he was honorably discharged, because of physical disability. Returning home he recuperated his strength and, May 25, 1864, again enlisted in Company F, One Hundred and Thirty-Seventh Indiana Volunteers, in which he served faithfully until October, 1864. On the 22d of February following, he was commissioned Captain, Company G, One Hundred and Forty-Ninth Indiana Infantry, and remained with his command until mustered out, at Nashville, Tenn., in October, 1865.

A 4th great-grandfather, John K. Moore was a corporal in Co. A, 65th Ind. Infantry. Enlisted in 1863 at Mt. Vernon, Ind. Mustered out June 1865. From Mt. Vernon,Posey Co, Ind.

Harvey Brokaw was born in Gibson County, Indiana (near Princeton) in 1845 and died in Batesville, Independence County, Arkansas on March 2, 1889. Harvey Brokaw was my great-great-grandfather.

This is my GG Grandfather's(William Carlton in Co D) brother.They came to Spencer Cty Indiana from Kentucky.

Born at Thompson, Geauga County, Ohio on 9 July, 1819. Moved to Boonville, Warrick County, Indiana in 1840. Married Priscilla Hougland on 9 October, 1842. She was born 10 December, 1824 and died 10 August, 1891. Joined the 65th Indiana Infantry on 12 August, 1862 and was honorably discharge on 22 June, 1865. Died in Boonville, Warrick, Indiana on 14 December, 1900 and was buried at Maple Grove Cemetery, Boonville, Indiana.

Entered as a private Jul 15, 1862. Promoted from Corporal to SGT Aug 20, 1863. Given field promotion to 1st LT by order of Maj Gen Phillip Sheridan Apr 7, 1865. Wounded in left leg at Resaca May 14, 1864. Mustered out of service Jun 22, 1865. Died Jun 29, 1910, Pike Co., Indiana. He was my gg-grandfather.

Originating from Germany and listed as an Engineer. He was a resident of Jasper. Resign Jan. 30, 1864 for Physical Disability S.O. No.27. There some speculation that he resigned due to being passed over twice for promotion to captain.
