When the civil war broke out he was attending DePauw university and on the 15th day of August 1862 he enlisted in Company H of the 66th Regiment of Indiana Infantry and served his country at the front untlil June 6th, 1865 when he was honorably discharged as a corporal. He married Elizabeth Ellis Coble June 20th, 1869. Buried Greenwood Cemetery, Newton, Harvey county, Kansas
