2nd Iowa Cavalry

Enlisted Aug. 31, 1861; re-enlisted March 1, 1864. Listed as a 'saddler.' He was listed as wounded on a casualty sheet dated April 26, 1862-June 6, 1862, near Corinth, Miss. Honorably discharged from the Army Sept. 19, 1865 at Selma, Ala.

Afflicted with 'camp fever' at Bird's Point, MO. Eventually got well enough to be sent home, but never completely recovered.

Enlisted as a Private on 13 November 1863 at the age of 18. Captured on 21 February 1864 at Prairie Station, MS. Died on 15 March 1864 at Columbus, MS.

Roswell Haskin of Linn Co., IA entered service in 1861 and died of wounds received at Farmington, MS in June, 1862. He is buried in Castek Cemetery, Linn Co., IA.

A druggist, enlisted as a Private on 21 January 1865 at the age of 18, was acting Hospital Steward and mustered out with distinguished service.

Dominic Black was Killed in Action at the Battle of Franklin. Family history has passed down that he was killed in this battle, but I found an account of his death in the History of the Second Iowa Calvary 149 - 151. Under the command of Sgt. Coulter they were involved in hand to hand combat. Dominic went to take the rebel colors and struck the color bearer with his sabre at which point a color guard shot Dominic in the heart, killing him. At which point Sgt Coulter seized the flag and steps away was shot in the shoulder and severely injured. An account of the hand to hand combat goes on for a couple of pages. Sgt. Coulter although wounded was able to get away with the rebel colors.
