18th Iowa Infantry

Albert enlisted in Company A of the 18th Iowa Volunteer Infantry on 12 July 1862, being paid a bounty of $25. He is listed as a farmer, 5'10' tall, 24 years old, with grey eyes and a fair complexion. He died on 8 January 1863 of wounds received the same day in the Battle of Springfield, one of the few major military actions fought in Missouri during the Civil War. He is interred in Grave 245 of Section 9 of the Springfield Military Cemetery.

[3 x great grandfather] Enlisted 7 Jul 1862 as a 3rd Sergeant. Mustered in 17 Jul 1862 at Dubuque, IA. Contracted measles and was discharged for disability on 27 Feb 1863 at St. Louis, MO.

The Kansas State Census Collection, 1855-1925 for Chikaskia, Sumner, Kansas shows John Miller at age 44 with his wife and children. It also shows he was Honorably discharged from the military, enlisted in Iowa, Company B, Regiment 18, Infantry.

John P Kingen was born 26 Feb 1843 in Iowa City, Johnson, IA. He married Eliza Miles on 3 Mar 1866 in Brooklyn, Poweshiek, IA and 5 children were born to this marriage, Jessie M, George E, Charles C, FLora N and Wallis B. Eliza Kingen died 25 Sep 1891 in Argentine, Wyandotte, KS. On 25 Jan 1893 John P Kingen and Sarah Nesbitt Foster were married in Kansas City, Jackson, MO. One child, Hazel G, was born to this marriage. John P Kingen died 10 Nov 1919 in Rosedale, Wyandotte, KS and was buried in Maple Hill Cemetery, Kansas City, Wyandotte, KS.

George Clark Lytal, 1823NC-1897AR, joined Co.E,18th Iowa Inf. in 1863 at Fort Smith, AR. He fought in the battle of Camden, Poison Springs and others. He survived the war and collected a government pension. He is buried in the Love Cemetery in Crawford Co.,AR with a government gravestone.

Thomas was a wagoneer, killed by guerillas October 22, 1864 near Ft. Smith, AR

Entered Service at Eddyville, Iowa 12-15, November 1863. Company F, 18th Infantry Regiment. Mustered out 20, July 1865, at Little Rock, AR. Died in 1913, at home in Arapahoe, Nebraska.

William C. Mapes died January 8,1863 defending Springfield, Missouri. He is buried at Springfield National Cemetery. His parents were Emanuel and Sarah Parker Mapes of Decatur County, Iowa. A soldier named Pike sent a letter to his parents, dated January 9, 1863 informing them of his death by being shot in the neck.

Henry C Root enlisted as a private and was promoted several times & was a Sergeant 4th Class when discharged July 20, 1865 Little Rock, Arkansas. He was a Master Stair Builder, traveled across the country on special jobs. He had at least 3 patents to his name for tools to lay out circular stairs. He died Mar 5, 1890 in Hoboken, NJ of pneumonia.

I have my great, great grandfather's original discharge form from the civil war...He was wounded slightly in the battle of Springfield, Mo. He was discharged when the unit was mustered out on July 20, 1865. The document is in good shape and has all the original seals and signatures. I wrote to the National Archives and got his military history and pension forms. Lots of interesting information. He seemed to have spent his remaining days in Stillwater, Ok....He is buried in Fairlawn Cemetery in Stillwater(Blk 2, L 13, Sp#1), B-1842 d-1915...

This information is listed in the accounts of the Battle of Springfield (MO) fought in January 1863. Van Meter was killed on 14 January and is buried in the Springfield National Cemetery.
