13th Kentucky Infantry

Confederate Colonel(& Captain)Ben E. Caudill, was born at Sandlick, KY, Letcher County, on January 11, 1830. He was the son of John A. Caudill and Rachel (Cornett) Caudill. In February of 1848, he married Martha L. Asbury of Tazewell County, Virginia. Ben E. Caudill organized 'Caudill's Army' in Kentucky which became part of the 5th Kentucky Infantry and then later the 13th Kentucky Mounted Calvary. On July 7, 1863, Colonel Ben E. Caudill & most of his men were captured in the battle at Salt Works near Gladesville, VA. He was one of the 'Immortal 600'. He was exchanged on August 3, 1864, and returned to his command on Sept 17, 1864. Ben E. Caudill and his men never did surrender, but simply disbanded and returned home at the end of the war. Ben E. Caudill was a well reknown Old Regular Baptist Preacher. He preached that, 'Everyone should lay aside all party spirits and place the churches on the same ground they were on before the war. In the future, you must be governed only by the Word of God, and you must try to live in peace.' He died at age 59, from a severe cold, pleurisy, and exhaustion on February 11, 1889, at the home of a friend in Claiborne County, Tennessee, while on a trip to Tennessee to organize another church. He was a man who lived soberly, righteously, and Godly. He was a man who was lead by the Holy Word of God.

Enlisted as a Pvt on 28 Sept 1861. Enlisted in Co. A, 13th Infantry Regiment Kentucky on 30 Dec 1861. Received a disability discharge on 15 May 1862. (Not the same William C. Wright who later enlisted in 35th KY Inf.)

Cpl William Blair was wounded near Resaca,Georgia. Remained with 13th Kentucky Regt U.S. until end of War. Settled near Glens Fork,Adair Co., Ky., took up study of Medicine, later Dr. William Blair, MD. His Daughter, Laura Blair, married Bryan Miller of Crocus, Adair Co., Ky. James E. Dillingham (1842 - 2 Nov 1863) died at the regimental hospital. He was the son of William and Susanna (Rice) Dillingham of Adair County, KY.

William Ryan served with Company D of the 13th KY Cavalry

enlisted 10/4/1862 at Whitesburg, Kentucky by BE Caudill married Frances Anne Goodwin in Louisa, Kentucky 1/29/1857

On Nov 5, 1861, Sam enrolled in the U. S. Army for 3 years and was mustered in on Dec 30, 1861 at Camp Hobson, Near Greensburg, KY by Captain S. M. Kellogg. He was assigned to Company F, 13th KY Infantry at the rank of Corporal. On December 14, 1863, Corporal Sam Allen was captured by the rebels while on the road to his regiment. He was taken to Belle Island, VA., a prisoner of war camp. Sam Allen was among the first prisoners to be transported to Andersonville Prison, arriving there on February 10, 1864 , already in a weakened condition. On March 22, he was listed in the hospital. He died at Andersonville on April 3, 1864 of Chronic Diarrhea. He is buried in the National Cemetery there, Grave no. 329. Along with nearly 13,000 others.

Joseph was a Confederate Army Private, Co. F. 13th Kentucky Cavalry. He enlisted 15 May 1863 and was captured at Glades Ville, Virginia on 7 July 1863. He was paroled at Camp Douglas, Illinois and subsequently transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland for prisoner exchange on 2 March 1865. In addition to 'Flitterfoot', George Wireman witnessed Polly's Pension Application. Further, in a deposition given on the same day as the application in 1913, Nelson Chaffins, 82 years of age and living in Knott Co., Kentucky, states that he too served with Joseph Conley in the Civil War.

Not my relative, but my friend's relative. I thought it would be nice to include him. He was with the 13th from the beginning to the end.

Henry R.S. Caudill was part of Ben E. Caudill' Army which was part of the 13th Cavalry. Ben E. Caudill and Henry R.S. Caudill were cousins.

Jeptha enlisted in the 13th Kentucky U.S. Volunteer Infantry and fought from Shiloh to the fall of Atlanta. The men of the 13th were noted for their valor under fire. After the war, Jeptha married Eliza Ann Lewis, of Carroll County, and spent his working life farming and railroading. Together, they had eight children; one daughter, Emma Eldora Mitchell, was my great-grandmother.
