23rd Kentucky Infantry

Silas was killed at Pickett Mills battle in Georgia in May 1864. He was in Tennessee working on a government survey with his father, Solomon, when the war broke out. He was conscripted by the Confederates and served for 7 months before he could run away and join the Union forces in Kentucky. The family was from Pennsylvania and had a small farm in Franklin, Tenn. which was confiscated and never returned to the family. He was the youngest in the family, 17 when he was conscripted. I have the letters he wrote to his sister in Ridgefield, Conn., including the letter informing the family of his death. He was 21 when he died.

Was told he was killed in action. Would like to find out? He never returned home.

He is listed in the family Bible as Capt. Benjamin S. Henderson.

John E. Horth is believed to have been born in Ohio. He lived in Petersburg, Boone, KY and enlisted in the 23rd Kentucky Regiment on 17 October 1861 at Camp King, KY. He was wounded during the war and did not survive. He died on 23 May 1864 and is buried at the Chattanooga National Cemetery in Tennessee.

I recently discovered that my gg grandfather was not only in the Civil War but a member of this unit. I am in process of requesting his pension records from the National Archives. What is interesting is that at time of his enlistment in 1864 he was not only married and over age 40 but had at least 8 of his children already born.

Son of William Goldsmith ( my wife's family tree ) Enlisted on 10/19/1861 at Camp King, KY as a Private. On 12/8/1861 he mustered into 'B' Co. This regiment was organized at Camp King near Covington. In the list of sixteen battles named on the colors of the regiment by order of Gen. Grant, appear Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, New Hope Church, Pine top, Kennesaw Mountain, Smyrna, Atlanta, Lovejoy's Station, all in the Atlanta campaign.

Born October 16, 1841 in Dayton, Ohio. Son of Jacob Straub and Barbara Kunz of Germany. Lived near Latonia Lakes, Kenton County, Kentucky in 1860. Enlisted at Camp King, Kentucky in 1861. Survived disease at Murfreesboro, Tennesee in 1862. Wounded at Battle of Atlanta, Georgia in 1864, had tip of right ear shot off. Survived the war and settled in Pendleton County, Kentucky. Married Parthena Tomlin in 1866 and had 8 sons. His children were, John Jr, Pete, Seymore, Eddie, Adam, Albert, Jasper, and Ezra Straub. Occupation after the war was farmer and delivered U.S. mail by horse and wagon from Gardnersville to Crittenden, Ky. John was a member of Abraham Wileman GAR Post, Falmouth, Kentucky. He died of a stoke in January 1918 at Gardnersville, Pendleton County, Kentucky. Burial at Gardnersville Cemetery.

Mustered in as a private. Name also spelled McIvane and McIlvanie. Wounded May 27, 1864 at the Battle of Pickett's Mill. Later settled in Lyons, Kansas, where he served as Probate Judge.
