James Armstrong is my great great grandfather. My grandfather was Arthur J. Vassar (mother Ellen Armstrong - my great grandmother). James Armstrong was a former slave in the 'Bell' plantation in Tennessee; his enlistment in the 48th was evidenced by his discharge document from Dec. 1864.
