My gg grandfather

Thomas was the brother-in-law to Richard McDonald Poteet & William Poteet of the same company. He was married to their sister, Sarah Poteet. They all enlisted and mustered out together.

Son of Fountain and Barbara Sands Land ( half-brother of Willis Land.) Cousins in N.C. & Tn. were Confederate. Regiment Name 52 Kentucky Infantry Company A Soldier's Rank_In Pvt. Enlisted on 6/23/1863 at Scottsville, KY as a Private. On 10/16/1863 he mustered into 'A' Co. KY 52nd Infantry Soldier's Rank_Out Pvt. He was Mustered Out on 1/18/1865 at Bowling Green, KY.

Richard was my GG Grandfather. His only child was my G Grandfather William R Poteet. He was married to Susan Rittenberry.

Joseph Vineyard Thomas 1837–1924 BIRTH 20 NOV 1837 • Allen Co., Kentucky, USA DEATH 17 APR 1924 • Warren Co., Kentucky, USA

He was a teamster in his company. Fought in many skirmishes against confederate guerrilla forces throughout Kentucky. He was wounded in the arm at Pound Gap, Ky. The wound developed into blood poisoning. He suffered from its effects ( blindness in one eye, and partial paralysis on one side of body) the rest of his life. Since he remained in touch with his war comrade Stephen T. Cornwell, he married Stephen's daughter Sarah. They lived on a veterans pension in Morganfield, Ky., and Evansville Ind.

He was born Dec 1837 in Allen Co., Ky. Serving in protection of Bowling Green, Ky. and throughout the state against confederate guerrilla warfare. While in camp he was stricken with a severe case of measles which affected his eyesight the rest of his life. He died 31 Oct 1907, in Union Co., Ky.

William was my great-grandfather. I am looking for more information on him and his brother John Thomas Hardcastle, both who family legend suggests died on pneumonia during the Civil War. I'm not convinced this is true in either case. I have some evidence that John may have been a Confederate soldier who is buried at Congressional Cemetery in Washington, DC.

Andrew's three brothers, Joseph Fleming Meador, James Ellis Meador, and John Henry Harrison Meador, as well as his brother-in-law, Joseph Turner, all enlisted and served in Co. D. James Ellis Meador kept a diary with an entry for each day of service. Also many of their letters have been copied and are available at the Simpson County (KY) Archives in Franklin, KY.

Declaration for Pension - 1923 - Manson Fielding Sadler enlisted at Franklin, Ky 17 Aug 1863 in Company 'D' 52nd Volunteer Mounted Infantry. Discharged 17 Jan 1865 at Bowling Green, Ky. Physical description, 5 foot 7 inches, fair complexion, blue eyes and dark hair. Disabilities, by reason of loss of sight in right eye and rheumatic condition of left knee and hip, he requires an attendant practically all the time, helpless for past 4 years
