George Willen served from Aug 31 1864 to Sept 15 1865. He fought in the second battle of Saltville in Dec 1864; was captured on Dec 24 and spent the next 50 days in Libby Prison, Richmond.

Born 1838 in Campbell County, Ky. Son of Elmore Black and Rosannah Abercrombie. Married in Kenton County, Kentucky on Sept.2, 1863 to Ellenora Casey, daughter of William Casey. Served in Kentucky Grays state militia in 1861 and 1862. Occupation before enlistment was cooper. Discription on enlistment record is 6 feet tall, dark hair, dark complextion. Enlisted in Company B, 53rd Kentucky Mounted Infantry in September 1864. Discharged September 15, 1865 at Catlettsburg, Kentucky. Fought at the Battles of Marion and Saltville, Virginia during Stoneman's Raid into Southwestern Virginia, and various skirmishes in Kentucky. After the war he settled on a farm in Pendleton County, Kentucky by 1880. Drew a pension from his service in the Army. Said his shoulder was disabled from getting hit with a plank during the war. Died of a heart attack on November 7, 1897 at his home near Pleasant Ridge, Pendleton County, Ky. Buried at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery with military marker. Sam had two brothers who also served in the Union army during the Civil War. They were Sgt. William H. Black, Co.E, 82nd Indiana Infantry (survived war), and Pvt. Benjamin F. Black, Co.A, 6th Kentucky Infantry, died Oct.1863 from wounds received at the Battle of Chickamauga,Ga.

My wife's ancestor, Son of John Rolland Goldsmith and Ann Greenwood. B.abt.1820. Enlisted on 9/15/1864 at Covington, KY as a Private. On 9/15/1864 he mustered into 'C' Co. He was Mustered Out on 9/15/1865 at Louisville, KY. A brief history of the regiment follows : This regiment was organized in the fall of 1864, at Paris. The men belonged to that section of the state. In the second expedition to Saltville it suffered much from cold and long, fatiguing marches. It participated in many skirmishes and battles, including Clinch River, Marion and Saltville, Va., in all of which it performed its duty to the entire satisfaction of the commanding generals. The regiment was mustered out at Louisville Sept. 15, 1865.

My Gr. Gr. Grandfather enlisted as a Farrier on 15 September 1864. Mustered out on 15 September 1864 at Louisville, KY. Enlistment place, Covington, Kentucky. Died 3 Feb 1907. Buried in Piqua, Ohio.

William H. Diets is the real spelling of the Diets name, but his record is under the spelling of Deets. It took a lot of research for me to prove this was him.

I have many legal documents related to Thomas Ingram's attempts to receive a pension from the U.S. gov't related to his war injuries.

Perry Meeks was born in Nicholas County, Kentucky on March 8, 1848. He was a Private in Company H, 53rd Regiment Kentucky Mounted Infantry. He enlisted at Lexington, Kentucky and served from October 17, 1864 to September 15, 1865. He married Mary C. Adams of Missouri and together they had 10 children. They moved to Oregon about 1904. He died October 23, 1924 and is buried in Canby, Oregon.

According to a statement by the War Department, Artemas Cooper was enrolled on March 18, 1865, at Greenupsburg,KY as a musician (most likely a drummer).

Marion Dowdy is not a relative however he is buried near my home in Rowan County,Kentucky.He married Maggie Belle (brown)Dowdy and is buried in the Sardis Cemetery on Clear Fork near Cranston,Kentucky.One of his sons was Virgil Dowdy who as a old man never missed a little league game.I remember him in the late 1970's setting in a lawn chair watching the local kids play.Virgil pass away shortly there after.Virgil had several sons.Two still lives in Rowan County.
