Sergeant
Benjamin Averill was my grandmother's grandfather. She knew him well as a youngster and has told me what a wonderful man he was. He was promoted to Sergeant sometime after Petersburg's charge, which he lived through. He was shot once but ive yet to find out during which battle. After the war in the 1890's, he continued to serve Maine as a member of the state legislature. All of which I have confirmed. Still a mystery is the family swearing he fought in gettysburg, which means he would have had to have been in a different unit at that time; possible, but I've found no proof in either direction of his wherabouts during that part of the war. I hope my information helps with your site and hope to find some more answers myself I can update you with. Great site.. keep up the good work. Adam S. Boyington
