Served 10 SEP 1862 to 26 AUG 1863.

Samuel enlisted 10/11/1862 and died in service at Port Hudson, La of fever 7/11/1863.

Enlisted as a Private on 13 October 1862 at the age of 18. Enlisted in Company B, 24th Infantry Regiment Maine on 13 Oct 1862. Died of disease Company B, 24th Infantry Regiment Maine on 2 Dec 1862.

His service was annotated as Distinguished. The enlistment date should read Oct 13, 1861 (as opposed to Oct 13, 1862 as he died Oct 2, 1862). He couldn''t have died eleven days before he enlisted. The Adjutant General Report does state he was 25 when he enlisted which would make the year 1861 (he was born Dec 12, 1836). In civilian life, Gustavus was a teacher.

Merchant; born China; res China; 5' 9-1/2' tall. Left service 25 Aug 1863; MO: honorable discharge. MO {Mustered out} at Augusta, Detached as Regimental Ward Master. A B Fletcher was a commander of the Amos J Billings Post #112, GAR, located at China Village. [This was a fraternity of Civil War vets-Grand Army of the Republic.] Died 21 June 1906 in China, Kennebec, Maine
