20th Massachusetts Infantry

Died in 'March 1864 at Washington D.C. of wounds received at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863'. This is from The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Adjutant General's Office Form dated February 26, 1913. His body was moved and buried again in Grave No. 6, Range J Oak Hill, Cedar Grove Cemetery on March 25, 1885 by Sarah Harrington at the cost of $8.00 ($4.00 was paid on March 25, 1885.). This is from the Certificate of Grave No. 6 dated March 25, 1885, City of Boston, by the Commissioners of Cedar Grove Cemetery.

my 2nd great grandfather enlisted in the 1st Ma., company B in East Boston, Ma. May 1861 and got sick in a hospital in Virginia were he was mustered out but then he re-enlisted into the Mass. 20th in August 1861 and did his 3 years of service mustering out as a private May 1864

Pankratz Herbst immigrated from Germany to New York City in Jan 1861. He enlisted from Boston, Mass. in June 1861 and was entered into the service at Camp Massant as Private of Company B, 20th Regiment, Massachusettes Volunteer Infantry under Capt. Herchenrither and Col. Lee to serve 3 years or during the war. The Regiment was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, 2nd Corps, Army of the Potomac and he took part with the Regiment in the battles of Balls Bluff Maryland Oct. 21, 1861, City Point Virginia 1862, Yorkstown April 5th to May 3rd, Fair Oaks May 31, Gaines Mills June 27, 1862, Savage Station June 29, Peach Orcherd June 29, White Oak Swamp June 30, Malvern Hill July 1 and 2, Bull Run Aug. 30, Antietam Maryland Sept. 17 where he was wounded in the right knee. At Fredricksburg Virginia Dec. 13 1862 he was wounded in the right calf and transferred to Harewood Hospital in Washington DC where a musket ball, two bone chips and a piece of his trousers were removed from his leg wound about four weeks later. He was than transferred to Lovell Hospital in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. He was honorably discharged at Bedloes Island N.Y. on account of expiration of term. He Re-enlisted in June 1864 as a Private in Company C, 21st Veterans Reserve Corps under Capt. Walsh and was assigned guard duty in Nashville, Tennessee for the duration of the war. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and honorable discharged in Oct. 1865 at Trenton N.J.

Transferred from Company C, 15th Infantry Regiment Massachusetts on 12 July 1864 while a prisoner at Andersonville, GA. Died of scorbutus on 18 December 1864 at Andersonville, GA. Buried at Andersonville National Historical Site. (Click homepage for image)

Charles also served in the 20th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, Company 'G' starting on 28 Jul 1864 He ended his service on 16 Jul 1865 mustering out He made application for a veteran's pension on 14 Jul 1877, received certificate number 148465

Elisha M. Smith resided in Tisbury, Martha's Vineyard, MA. He mustered into service as a private in August, 1861 at Camp Meigs (Massasoit), Readville, MA. He was wounded during the 20th's advance in the West Woods at the Battle of Antietam, and after recouperating in hospital for five months returned to his regt. and was promoted to corporal in the color guard. He was carrying the regimental colors on the afternoon of July 3 during the repulse of Pickett's Charge at the Copse of Trees in Gettysburg, when wounded a second time. After being transported to the Camden St. Hospital in Baltimore, he died of tetanus on July 11, 1863, aged 18.
