23rd Massachusetts Infantry

Lt Col John Chambers was adjutant and later commander of the regiment. He was mortally wounded while commanding the regiment at the Battle Drury Bluff in May 1864, and died at Hampton Hospital near Ft Monroe, VA.

Capt William Bemis Alexander, Co E, wounded in hand at Battle of New Bern, March 14, 1862. Capt. Alexander was more seriously wounded in the left arm while engaged in the Union capture of New Bern, N. C., 14 March 1862. The Alexanders lived in Boston where William worked as a carpenter before enlisting with the Union Army.

Enlisted as a Private on 20 September 1861 at the age of 18. Mustered in Company G, 23rd Infantry Regiment Massachusetts on 28 September 1861. Mustered out on 25 June 1865 at New Berne, NC.

my 2nd great grandfather enlisted into the 23rd Mass. regiment in July 1862 and fought in 2 major battles being wounded twice and almost killed at Drurys Bluff were half his regiment were cut to pieces, he was honorably mustered out October 1864.

Commissioned as a Captain in Company G, 23rd Infantry Regiment Massachusetts on 4 December 1861. Promoted to Full Lieutenant Colonel on 14 July 1864. Promoted to Full Colonel on 20 September 1864. Mustered out on 25 June 1865 at New Berne, NC.
