42nd Massachusetts Infantry

not a relative, but found his obit recently while researching Irish in Bangor, Maine. He died on 24 Feb 1917, born 1843 Maine of Irish-born parents and the obit says he fought in the 42nd Massachusetts regiment in the Civil War. Was the 1916 Commander of the E. H. Beale Post G.A.R.

Frederick enlisted in the 42nd in the first callup for Union volunteers. His was a 90 day unit. They traveled to New York and then by Steam Ship to New Orleans. Frederick contracted 'Malaria Poisoning' while in New Orleans and he was awarded a pension of $8.00 a month. He lived most of his time at the National home for disabled veteran soldiers and sailors at Togus Maine. This exact place is where the current V.A. hospital now stands. Frederick is buried in the Military Cemetery there.

I'm in possession of a proclamation of the General Court and signed by Governor William Claflin of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, dated 1869, honoring the service of George B Andrews in the cause of suppressing the Rebellion. I'd like to know more about the history of Company B of the 42nd Regiment.

Enlisted as a Private on 3 September 1862 at the age of 21. Mustered in Company B, 42nd Infantry Regiment Massachusetts on 13 September 1862. Mustered out on 20 August 1863 at Readville, MA. Re-enlisted on 22 July 1864. Mustered out on 11 November 1864.

He was my great-grandfather. If anyone sees his photo anywhere, I would very much like a copy. There is a lot of excellent info regarding Company F at The New England Historic & Genealogical Society...on microfiche...E492/C58/1991...CIVIL WAR UNIT HISTORIES..Part 2..The Union-New England:Regimental Histories & Personal Narratives. I actually found several interesting references to my great-grandfather, Timothy Mason Duncan.

Says he served in the 42nd Mass company F on Aug 10, 1862 to Aug 20th, 1863.

Henry Prouty served in the 42nd Mass and died in 1909

He is listed with middle initial as G but that is just what the hand writing on the records made it look like. He was captured at Galveston, Texas and paroled.

Enlisted as a Private on 8 September 1862 at the age of 26. Mustered in Company I, 42nd Infantry Regiment Massachusetts on 16 September 1862. Mustered out on 20 August 1863 at Readville, MA.

Evelyn was my great great grandfather from South Boston. Enlisted October 30, 1862 at the age of 21. Mustered August 20, 1863 out of Readville.(which was a part of Boston.) Ordered to Galveston, Texas, to cooperate with the blockading fleet,co 'I' arrived in Galveston on Christmas Day, 1862. January 1,1863 they were attacked by a force which had crossed over from the mainland. Taking refuge on Kuhns' Wharf, after a gallant defense,three companies were forced to surrender to the Confederate commander General Magruder. He became a POW at Camp Verde in Galveston TX. He also served in Co 'D' 2nd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery. He survived the war and died in Boston on Feb. 1, 1916.
