Of Calhoun County, MS. Enlisted @ Concord MS on August 17, 1863 @ 37 years of age. Survived the war. Was in the 8th Mississippi Cavalry. 8th was often associated with Nathan Bedford Forrest

Sterling L. Sanders, originally enlisted in the 21 Mississippi Infantry on May 16, 1861, in New Albany, MS, at the age of 19. Occupation listed as 'Farmer'. Company Muster Roll dated Nov. and Dec., 1862 reports, 'Absent, Left in Maryland wounded.' Admitted to No. 5, U.S.A. Gen'l Hospital, Frederick, MD, Nov. 25 1862, for 'Gunshot through Bowels'. Appears on a Roll of Confederate Prisoners of War received at Fort McHenry, MD, February 14, 1863, Captured at South Mountain, Sept. 28, 1862. On March 2, 1863, After being paroled, Sterling was furloughed 40 days; sent home to Mississippi to recover from wounds, never to return to the 21 MS infantry. On August 17, 1863, Sterling enlisted in the 8th Mississippi Cavalry in Concord, MS. During Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest's defense of North Mississippi in 1864, Private Sterling Sanders was mortally wounded (Gunshot on left side) at the Battle of Harrisburg (Tupelo) MS on July 14, 1864. He was received at Lee Hospital in Lauderdale Co., MS, where he died from his wounds on August 2, 1864. Sterling was buried in the Mississippi Confederate Cemetary in Lauderdale Springs, MS. His military record contains an 'Inventory of Effects' from the Surgeon in charge that lists the personal property of Private Sterling Sanders: One hat, two spurs, one pair of boots, one pocket book, twenty dollars, Mississippi State Money. Private Sterling Sanders was my Gr-Gr Uncle.

James was born 15 Nov 1826 in Greene County, Alabama. The 1860 census finds him at age 33 in Division 1; Chickasaw Co. Miss. the Post Office is at Buena Vista. He enlisted at Columbus, Miss. 14 Nov 1861in the 4th Battalion of Cavalry. Capt. Charles G. Field's Co. Pope Walker's Battalion of Cavalry. His horse value is $275 & equipment $30. He has 4 cards in this archival file. This Battalion became Co. C of the 8th Regiment Confederate Cavalry according to one source after the battle of Shilo 6 - 7th April 1862 and another source says 1864. Duff's Cavalry. I have not found his records in the 8th just a reference on the previous CMR's The 4th Battalion and the 8th rode with Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest in his fight in Mississippi. Battles: Sturge's Mississippi expedition 1 -13 June 1864, Brice's Crossroads 10 June 1864 aka by the yankees as Camargo Crossroads where the 8th battle flag was captured by the yankees. Tupelo 14 July 1864, August 1864 A.J. Smith's 2nd Mississippi Expedition, and March - April 1865 Wilson's Raid. Beginning assignment McCulloch's Brigade, Chalmer's Division, Forrest's Cavalry Corps. Dept. of Alabama, Mississippi and East Louisiana and ended in Starke's Brigade, Chalmer's Division, Forrest's Cavalry Corps. In 1865 the remnants were consolidated into the 6th Miss. Cavalry. James died 29 Nov either 1890 or 1900 in Chickasaw Co. Miss. We are related thru marriage via my 4th cousin Temperance Gandy.

Tilman Newton Ross transferred from the 31st Infantry Regiment, along with his brother William T. Ross, in late 1863, to the 8th Cavalry.

William T. and his brother, Tilman Newton Ross joined the 31st Infantry Regiment on March 13, 1862 and after his brother recovered from severe wounds from the battle of Baton Rouge,La they were transferred to the 8th Cavalry, Co. D. This transfer was near the end of 1863 and both fought together throughout the Civil War. William T. Ross was born 29 August 1833 in Spartanburg, SC and died 14 January 1914. He, his wife and two children are buried in the Old Double Springs Cemetery, near Mantee, MS in Webster County. He married Sarah Morgan in SC. Their children: Christopher Columbus, James LF Ross, Ophelia F. Ross, Dallas M. Ross, all born in Choctaw County, MS.
