Killed during Pickett's charge at Gettysburg

My wife's GGrandfather's brother. Killed at Gettysburg on 1 July 1863. Body was never recovered. Family believes his body was buried in the Gettysburg Tomb of the Unknown Soldier because of where the remains were found in the 1990's.

Captured at Gettysburg, spent remainder of war in POW camp. Married widow of my wife's Great Grandfather's brother and his best friend, James Wright Bond, who was killed opening day of battle at Gettysburg

Joseph's records are provided at Film number M232 roll 33, Civil War Soldier & Sailors System (http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/). He was born 1833 in Alabama and probably died in Indian Territory, Oklahoma. Joseph was one of my cousins. He was brother to my GGGGrandfather - Samuel B. Reed, Jr.

Born 26 July 1828 in TN. Enlisted 1 March 1862 at Jacinto Tishomingo Co MS. Married, Farmer. Wounded at Gettysburg 1 July 1963. Sent to Davids Island New York Union prisoner of war camp. Paroled from camp but date not clear. After the war census records lists him as a Physician. In a bio of his son-in-law it states he learned to become a Dr by attending the sick and wounded at this camp. Died 22 Apr 1896 near Manchester, Red River Co TX. Buried at Cuthand Cemetery, RR Co TX. Note: After the war he moved his family to Arkansaw and then to Texas.

Charles Franklin Dry enlisted in Co. B of the 2nd Mississippi Regiment in March 1861 and was confined in Chester Va. due to measles and then discharged and sent home arriving there in Tippah County Mississippi in July 1861. In March of 1862 Mr. Dry enlisted in the same Company under the same Captain and Colonel. He was then sent to various destinations including Yorktown Virginia, Fredricksburg Virginia and then to the Capital of the new nation, Richmond in that same period. From there he was sent back to Fredricksburg and ultimately was part of reinforcements to Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson and was then sent and fought in the battle of Gaines Mill. On June 27, 1862 at about 5:00p.m. Pvt. Dry was a part of Evander Law's charge along wih Hood's Texans which broke the Union lines which ultimately helped save Richmond. It was at this time that Pvt. Dry received the wound which caused him to loose his right leg. Pvt. Dry was sent to a hospital to in Manchester Va. for 6 weeks. Pvt. Dry then was sent to the Bacon & Baskerfield Tobacco Comapny in Richmond Virginia which had been converted into a hospital. Pvt Dry stayed there for two weeks until his Uncle, Martin Dry, sent for him and he stayed with his uncle in Concord, NC and then was sent home to Tippah County Mississippi in 1863.

Drafted in July 1862. When his wife Ary, was pregnant with my Great Grandfather, Jabez William Butler, Jr. he deserted December 7th, 1862. Returned to service 20 Feb 1963, the month after he was born.

1843-? Enlisted in Richmond, Itawamba Co. on 6 Feb 1861. Transferred to Company B, 45th Mississippi Infantry Regiment on 1 June 1863, wounded during the Battle of Chickamauga on 20 Sept 1863. He was promoted to 4th Corporal on 1 Feb 1864. He was still present on the rolls for April 1864, after which there is no further record of him.

Robert was born 29 Jan 1845 in Pine Grove, Tippah Co. Miss. He has 11 cards in his archival file. His story begins on 19 Sept 1861 when he lied about his age when he enlisted in Co H 2nd Miss. Infantry [Beck Rifles] at Iuka, Tippah Co. Miss. The Post Office is at Pine Grove. Enlisted by Lieut. Davenport. The Conscription Act of 1862 stated that all combatants under 18 y/o should be discharged. Upon arrival at his regiment in Virginia the first battle of Manassas had ended, and the regiment was in winter quarters at Camp Fisher in Dumfries, Va. Assigned to the 3rd Brigade 2nd Corps under the command of General William Whiting. He was present for the battles of Seven Pines [ where the 2nd Miss was in the front ranks beside the 4th Alabama just NE of Fair Oaks at what is known on the battlefield as the Pivot Point. at the heart of the fight. It is incredible that he did not die or suffer a serious mishap in such a precarious position. His second fight was at Cold Harbor/ Gaine's Mill after which word came of his discharge per the aforementioned Conscription Act. He is processed out, paid and also given travel allowance to his point of enlistment at Iuka, Miss. He is described at 17 y/o and 6 feet 1 inch tall. He probably reenlisted as the war later came to his hometown. I have not found the records of further service. He died 7 Oct 1919 at Watalula, Franklin Co. Ark. He is buried in the Belk Cem in Franklin County. Ark. He was the husband of my 1st cousin 3 x removed.

Gideon was born 7 April 1836 in Tippah Co. Mississippi. He enlisted 9 Mar 1861 as Pvt. in Capt. Wm. D Becks Co. [Joe Mathew's Rifles] at Toombs Store. He has 37 items in his archival file. This unit became Co D. 2nd Miss Infantry. He was promoted to 5th Sgt. on 19 Nov 1861. On 21 May 1863 he is elected to 2nd Lieut. Junior grade. His first fight was at Seven Pines aka Fair Oaks or Fair Oaks Station. Afterward he was out sick and them on furlough until the battle of Gettysburg. He was wounded and taken prisoner on the 3rd of July. Sent to Johnson's Island, Ohio until 21 March 1865 when he was sent to Point Lookout for exchange. He swallowed the "Yellow Dog" and was released 12 June 1865. Described as having light complexion, light hair, blue eyes and 5 foot 6 inches tall. He is from Tippah Co. Miss. Served with Heath's Division, 3rd Corps Army of Northern Virginia. He died 13 Feb 1894 in Memphis, Tenn. Buried in Willis Cem. Binghampton, Shelby Co. Tenn. He was the father-in-law of my 4th cousin 3 x removed.

My ggg-grandfather enlisted on Aug. 10, 1861, at Camp Jones, Va., by Lt. Stone. He is listed as 26 years old, but this doesn't jibe. Born April 12, 1839, in Alabama, S.J. Brandon figures to have been 22 at time of enlistment. Mustered into Co. H, known as the 'Coonewah Rifles.' Fought in the following battles: 1st Manassas: July 21, 1861 Seven Pines: May 30-June 1, 1862 South Mountain: Sept. 14, 1862 Gettysburg: July 1,3 1863 Falling Water: July 14, 1863 Bristoe Station: October 14, 1863 Wilderness: May 5, 1864 (suffered wound that resulted in loss of leg) Appears on register of Receiving and Wayside Hospital (General Hospital No. 9), Richmond, Va. Admitted, Aug. 6, 1864. Died May 12, 1913, at Beauvoir Veterans Home. Buried in Beauvoir Confederate Cemetery, Biloxi, Miss. Brother of Philip F. Brandon (b. 1837), who served in Co. F ('Magnolia Rifles') of 2nd Mississippi Infantry before transferring into Co. H.

Lt. Brookshire enlisted in mississippi as a Corp. in the infantry. He re-enlisted and was made a lt. He was killed at Gaines Mill. Have not been able to find his grave over the internet.

Wounded in both legs in battle at Sharpsburg, Maryland on September 17, 1862. Furloughed and returned to duty. Severely wounded (left shoulder and face) in Battle of the Wilderness on May 5, 1864. Furloughed, permanently disabled. Younger brother to George W. Weatherington (see above).

My GG Grandfather born in Rockhill, S.C. Cherry Creek Rifles, Co I. Mustered in w/ Company G. Found a letter online but was unable to purchase it, written by Campbell: WE HAVE JUST ARRIVED AT HARPERS FERRY, THE ABOLITIONISTS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TAKE IT, May 22nd, 1861, Harpers Ferry, VA. 1 large page in ink to Mr. Caldwell from Lt. Samuel A. Campbell, Company I, 2nd Mississippi Infantry, "Cherry Creek Rifles". He relates in part...We have just arrived at Harpers Ferry, it is impregnable and can't be taken by the abolitionists, the mountains are alive with men, many became sick and were left along the road, Ben [Ben Caldwell] is well, he says he does not want to come home until this is settled as his heart is in Mississippi, send regards to all at home...S.A. Campbell. Buried at Cherry Creek Cemetery, Pontotoc, MS. 12/7/1827 to 5/24/1917 Also related to Lewis A McPherson, 2nd Mississippi, Co. H.

This is my great great grandfather

enlisted in Co I the 'Cherry Creek Rifles' in 1861 in Pontotoc Cty, MS. Killed in action, July 3, 1863, Gettysburg, PA.

William enlisted in Iuka, Mississippi March 1st 1862. Wounded at the Battle of Seven Pines on May 31st, 1862, Wounded for a second time at the Battle of Sharpsburg on September 17th, 1862, where he was captured and died due complications from amputation of left leg on January 15th, 1863. His grave is #189 at the Mt. Olivet Hospital Cemetery at Frederick, MD.

My great grandfather was James C. Hughes. After the war he was a preacher at the My. Giiiead Baptist Church of Christ at Iuka, Mississippi. He is buried in the Mt. Gillead Cemetary. My grandfather was Owen W. Hughes. He was born in Jacinto, and raised in Iuka; where he met and married my grandmother who was Fannie Seago. They moved to Nashville,TN. and had three daughters( actually, at least Willard and Frances were born in Iuka), one of whom was my mother, Nancy Frances Hughes (Grainer). Owen was an attorney,a judge and one of the early Deans of the YMCA Law School (presently the Nashville School of Law)in Nashville. He and my grandmother are buried in Woodlawn Cemetary ( Nashville ). My mother and my Aunt Sis(Willard) are deceased, and my Aunt Toppy(Louise) lives in So Californis.
