Would like any info. on my relative James M. Mooneyham also known as James W. Mooneyham and J.M. or J.W. Mooneyham.

A portion of this company was formed in the Bankston community of Choctaw County. In this unit were three of my great-great grandfathers and numerous uncles. Daniel Franks, son of Nathaniel Garner Franks, survived the war to become the oldest living confederate veteran in Choctaw County; he died in 1944 at age 101. He was captured at Fort Donelson, TN and was a prisoner in Indiana for 6 months, exchanged and went on to be wounded in the GA campaign and to survive the siege at Vicksburg.

This is my great-great grandfather. He and three of his sons were in this company which was formed in Choctaw County.

J.T. Johnson enlisted 6 Oct 1862 at Union City by Col. Drake. He reportedly ran away from home to enlist. He has 8 service records as a private in the 4th MS Infantry and 2 service records in the 15th MS Infantry. His confederate pension file reports that he was a prisoner of war twice.

In the archive records there are 2 J W Johnsons listed, and listed as Sr. and Jr. These are unrelated men, from different areas. My gr-gr grandfather, James Wesley Johnson, called Wesley, is shown as Jr. (DOB February 5,1845,Jefferson Co TN, moved to Choctaw County late 1840s DOD April 14,1913, buried Old Salem Cem., Chester, Choctaw Co. MS) Went absent without leave over the winter of 1863-64 and did not return to CSA service.

W.R. Cade (1825-1875), Native of Wilkes County, GA; Died in Carroll County, MS. My 3rd great-grandfather.

Born in March 1827 in Fayette Co. Alabama.

Enlisted Aug. 24th 1861 at Grenada by General West. Was captured at Big Black 17th of May, 1863 in the Filed near Vicksburg, Mississippi, June 29th, 1863.Was exchanged at Vicksburg, July 4th, 1863. Also captured Feb. 16th, 1862 at Fort Donelson. POW at Camp Morton, IND.

Francis Marion Tart with his brothers John and George Washington Tart all fought on the side of the Confederacy. George W. Tart was with Company C of the 8th Regiment Mississippi Cavalry. Francis Marion Tart is my GG Grandfather.

John was about 28 years old when he enlisted at Grenada, Miss on 24 Sept 1862. His archival records are filed under John Boland. He was born in Sweden. He was captured and paroled at Vicksburg, Miss on 4 July 1863. Was in the battle of Franklin and captured near Nashville. He died in the hands of the enemy in Mid Dec 1864 at Munfordsville, Hart Co Ky. He was the husband of my 4th oousin 4 x removed.

This is my Great Grandfather. He was at Siege of Vicksburg, and after that somehow ended up near the end of the war in the Confederate prison camp on Ship Island. He spent the last years of his life in the Old Soldier's home established by Jefferson Davis at Beauvoir on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. He died there in 1922 and is buried in our family plot at Evergreen Cemetary in North Carrollton, Mississippi.

Killed at Vicksburg--June 1863

Lewis was born in Georgia in 1825. The 1860 census has him in at age 35 in Dark Corner Beat, Holmes County Miss. He enlisted 1 Aug 1861 at Vicksburg by Capt. Nelson. He died 11 Sept. 1863 after the battle of severe wounds received in that battle. We are related by a distant marriage.

Haywood was born 10 Apr 1843 in Richmond County, North Carolina. His family along with many other family members moved to Decatur, Holmes County Mississippi. After the war Haywood and his family moved back to Richmond Co. NC. The 1860 census finds him at age 18 in Holmes County. Miss. He enlists 24 Aug 1861 in Capt. T.P. Nelson's Co. 4th Miss Vols. at Durant and musters at Grenada. He has 24 cards in his Confederate Archival File. Haywood has the distinction of having been captured 3 times and paroled to rejoin the fight. He was captured first on 16 Feb 1862 at Fort Donalson, 2nd 4 July 1863 captured at Vicksburg, and 3rd captured 16 Dec 1864 captured at Nashville. Sent to Camp Douglas Ohio, received there on 2 Jan 1865. When released he was sent to Vicksburg where is found in the US Army Hospital being treated for Chronic Diarrhea. He was discharged from the hospital on 13 May 1865. He was my 1st cousin 4 x removed. He died in Rockingham, Richmond County, NC and is believed to be buried in the East Side cemetery in that town beside his wife, neither have gravestones.

Benjamin was born in Georgia in 1828.The 1860 census has him at age 32 in Dark Corner Beat, Holmes County, Miss. He has 19 items in his archival file. He enlisted1 Dec 1862 at Durant, He saw action at Chickasaw Bayou. At Vicksburg, he was captured and paroled. Assigned to General's S.D. Lee and W.E. Baldwins Brigade. Fought through the Atlanta Campaign and back to Tenn. where he was seriously injured in the head at the battle of Franklin on 20 Nov 1864. Suffering from the effect a cannon fragment he died in the hospital 23 Dec 1864. He lies in a grave in that place. He was the husband of my 1st cousin 4 x removed.

Cornelius was 32 years old when he enlisted 1 Nov 1862 at Carrollton, Carroll Co Mississippi. Captured 4 July 1863 at Vicksburg and paroled. Captured at Nashville, Tenn. 15 Dec 1864 and sent to Louisville and on to Camp Douglas in Chicago Ill. He died of Pneumonia on 23 Jan 1865. Buried in Chicago City Cemetery block 2... Related by marriage.

Pvt. F.M. Heath was the son of Lamarcus Heath and Salina Perry James Heath born in MS in 1833, third child of 14. He became ill with fevers and died 10 Dec 1861 at an unknown place. The location of his grave is also unknown. His youngest sister was my great-grandmother on my mother's side of my family. F.M.'s Soldier Record is on www.itd.nps.gov/cwss (National Parks Service). He died about 14 months before the enlistment of his younger brother C.C. (Christopher Columbus Heath). C.C. was signed up at Corinth, MS, by a Lieut. Fox, so it seems as though F.M. might have enlisted there too.

Pvt D.W. Holman from Carrollton, MS, enlisted at the age of 16. He was surrendered at Vicksburg on 4 July 1863. He is believed to have died in Forsyth County, GA from wounds received fighting in the Atlanta Campaign.

Jesse enlisted at Carrallton, Carroll County Mississippi on 1 March 1862. Enlisted by Lt. Col. Liddell for 12 months. Jesse served for two years before being captured at the battle of Nashville on 16 Dec. 1864. He is sent to Louisville, Ky and on to Camp Chase. He is released on 12 June 1865 after swallowing the Yellow Dog. He lists his home as Carroll Co. Miss. He is 29 years old ,six foot tall ,has a dark complexion, dark hair and grey eyes.

John has 25 cards in his file. He was 18 years old when he joined Capt. Jos. J Gee's Co. Mississippi Vol's. This became Co H 4th Regt. Miss. Infantry John served the entire four years. He was captured 3 times. 16 Feb. 1862 at the disaster at Fort Donelson. Sent to Camp Morton, Indianapolis, Ind. exchanged 24 August 1862. Captured again at Vicksburg on 4 July 1863 and paroled 9 July. He again rejoined his unit and was captured near Chattachoochie,Georgia on 9 July 1864. He was sent to Louisville, Ky. and on to Camp Douglas Ill. arriving on 20 July 1864. He was released on 16 June 1865. He is from Carroll County Mississippi.

George D. Taylor was killed during the Battle of Franklin in December 1864. He was among those commended by name by General Claudius Sears for reaching the federal works -- so many died in the attempt. He was the son of Armstead Taylor of Carroll County, Mississippi. His brother-in-law William Bluford Holland was killed at Gettysburg in July 1863.

Nathaniel Berry McComb,my great great grandfather, and his two brothers, Abraham Cody McComb and William H. McComb all served together in the 4th Miss company K. They were captured twice; at Fort Donaldson and Big Black. I'd love to get all the info I can. Sometimes the last name was spelled McCombs.

ADC Gen'l's Crittenden, Johnson, Hood. Enrollment Officer, Brookhaven, MS. Led Company 50th TN Inf. at Battle of Raymond. In Santa Rosa, CA, Rural Cemetery. I have tons of info on this man.

Thomas Winterton joined Co D as a private, was elected 1st Sgt within Co D, and then 2nd Lt and then 1st Lt as the 4th Miss Inf adjutant. He fought at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson (captured and was a prisoner at Camp Chase and Camp Douglas (1st Sgt)); exchanged at Vicksburg (2nd Lt) and fought at Chickasaw Bayou, Port Gibson, Big Black River, and Vicksburg (captured at Vicksburg); served in Mobile, AL; Meridian, MS; and fought in the Atlanta Campaign (Resaca, Pumpkin Vine Creek, New Hope Church, Lost Mountain, Kennesaw Mountain, Peach Tree Creek, Atlanta). He was medically retired in 1864 prior to the Army of Tennessee marching to Franklin, TN as he had been fighting for over a year with a hernia.
