This is my gggrandfather on my grandmother's side. He is buried in Mount Zion Cemetery Apple Springs, Trinity Co. Texas His Tomb Stone reads: HR Gibson 7-25-1844 to 2-27-1925 Pvt. Co. B Miss Inf. CSA

William Giles (my great grandfather) was a member of the Westville Guards, Company B, 16th Mississippi Infantry. At some point in the war he was captured and spent the remainder of the war in an Ohio prison. He was released at war's end and walked back to Westville, MS. I'm trying to find out at which battle he was taken prisoner and in which prison he was incarcerated.

My maternal great, great grandfather, H.J. Aldrich was a carpenter by trade and was captured 30 April 1863 while repairing a bridge near Fredericksburg and sent to the Old Capital Prison. He was exchange @ City Point, VA on 11 May 1863 and in April 1864 transferred to the Navy. After the war he returned to Natchez, married and started a family before moving to southern IL. John Russell in Company I co-signed Henry's marriage bond. Note: Frederick 'Gus' Aldrich in Company D is believed to have been Henry's brother.

Charles was my gg-Uncle. He was buried in the Old Shady Grove Cemetery in Webster Co., Mississippi. His brothers John O Quinn and David N Quinn and a sister, Melvina E Quinn Crumby are also buried there. His military information was engraved on his white marble military headstone.

William Pinkney Boutwell was the only surviving son of James Allen Boutwell and Ellender Tullos born June 6, 1846 presumably in Marion County, Mississippi. William served during the Civil War as a Private in the 16th Infantry, Company E, CSA entering the Confederate Army from Pike County. William married Mazurian Jane Boutwell; together they raised a family of twelve children. The family left Pike County for Lawrence County for a while but where back in Pike County by the turn of the century. William and Mazurian are buried in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery in Lawrence County. The information contained herein was transcribed from his Bible by grandson Julius Dewitt Shivers; the whereabouts of the actual Bible are unknown.

Enlisted as a Private on 10 February 1864 at the age of 17. Knocked down by an exploding shell, losing hearing in his right ear and captured on 2 April 1865 at Fort Gregg, Petersburg, VA. Sent to Point Lookout on 5 April 1865. Released on 10 June 1865. (Click homepage for image)

Hoping to find information on my Great Grandfather.Born in Magnolia Ms. 1831......Had a brother John, Joined the 16th Mississippi with his brother John. Wounded at Sharpsburg and his Brother John rendered Disabled. There were two newspaper articles about his death in Magnolia Newspaper. He died on Jan 1st 6:30AM....do not remember the year, about 1868. Would like to visit his Grave and would like to know how his family got to Mississippi and from where....I think Ireland.

Enlisted at Holmesville, Pike County, MS as a Private. Served until 1863 and rose to the rank of Third Lieutenant. Lost right hand at the Battle of Chancellorsville. Retired to the Invalid Corps in 1863 and returned home to Pike County, MS. Became sheriff of Pike County in 1870 and served for three terms. Enlisted on May 31, 1861 in Corinth, Mississippi, at the age of 22. On December 31, 1861 he extended his enlistment for two years or the war, for a $50 bounty. On the Company Muster Roll for Aug. 1862 he is listed as 'Detailed as a Teamster on August 18, 1862'. Listed as a 'Driver of Forage Wagon' and an 'Ambulance Driver' on subsequent Muster Rolls

Son of my Gr-Gr-Grandfather Jonathon Anderson, born in Mississippi in 1843. Enlisted on April 27, but the year is incomplete and just says 186_. This was the unit his brother Norvell and his uncle Greenberry served in.

Son of my Gr-Gr-Grandfather Jonathon Anderson, born in Mississippi in 1840. Enlisted in the 16th Mississippi Co. F on May 31, 1861 at Corinth Mississippi. He received a 'bounty' of $50 for extending his enlistment for 'two years or the war' on February 5, 1862. The Company Muster Roll for May & June 1864 lists him as 'Absent. Taken prisoner by the enemy at Spotsylvania, Virginia May 12, 1864'. He was Paroled as a Prisoner of War from Fort Delaware on September 14, 1864, and 'exchanged' on September 18, 1864. He was sent to Stuart Hospital in Richmond, Va. on September 23rd and died a few weeks later on October 4, 1864 from 'intermittent fever'.

Hospitalized with scorbutus (scurvy) 6/14 -7/3/1863 in Mississippi Soldiers' Hospital, Richmond. Hospitalized with gunshot wound 7/9-15/1863 in Mississippi Soldiers' Hospital, Richmond. He was Killed In Action in the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, VA.

John M Fewox is the son of John and Elizabeth Fewox, brother to William, Peter, and Thomas J. He enlisted at Paulding MS March 3, 1862. He was wounded at Sharpsburg on Sept 17, 1862.

'Frank', son of James and Margaret Adams, joined up at the beginning with his elder brother John. Injured in August 1864 at Battle of Weldon Railroad near Petersburg. Taken to hospital in Richmond, died three days later--family stories say that he lost a leg in the battle. Still searching for his gravesite, probably in Richmond. His widow Angeline Floyd Adams married George Washington Boykin and they moved from Smith Co to Sharkey Co, MS.

Adams family from Marion SC to Smith Co 1848. John and his brother Francis Marion Adams joined up at the beginning. John on pay records through March 1865, may be the 'Jos Adams Sgt' listed at surrender with the unit.

Pvt. S.A. (Silas Andrew) Shirley, 16th Mississippi Inf., Co. H, Smith County Defenders,killed in action at Spotsylvania Courthouse, May 12, 1864.He was the son of William Shirley and Nancy Rebecca Adams. He died at 24 years of age. Shirley enlisted July 10, 1861, and fought through all major actions with the 16th until his death.Died of wounds at Bloody Angle with the 16th. Buried in Confederate Cemetery at Spotsylvania, VA. in Mississippi section as ' S.C. Shirley.' When removed from battlefield his marker was blurred and buried as 'S.C.'instead of 'S.A.' From web site of National Park Service:'Fighting at the “Bloody Angle” of Spotsylvania Court House was some of the most ferocious and deadly that occurred during the Civil War. Mississippians from General Nathaniel Harris’s Brigade were some of the regiments thrown into the Confederate defense of the Bloody Angle on May 12, 1864. Many of those who fell in the fighting were buried behind the lines and in the fields near the Neil McCoull House. Two years later, their graves remained, marked by simple wood headboards. Visible in photo are the graves of men from the 16th Mississippi Infantry: Sergeants Stephen W. Dampeer and J.B. Summer; Privates Samuel C. Bakins, T.K. Curry, S.A. Shirley and T. White. These men now rest in the Spotsylvania Confederate Cemetery.' You may see these photos of markers at National Park Service website.

Captain James D. Cage enlisted as a private in Company K, the 'Wilkinson Rifles.' He completed his service as a captain, and after extended service as courier to A. P. Hill, was transferred to Company H, 7th Louisiana Volunteers in 1864.

W. C. Cage enlisted in April 1861 in the 'Wilkinson Rifles.' He served as courier to Gen. Longstreet at Gettysburg, was commended for gallantry by Gen. Posey in 1863, and was transferred to the staff of Gen Harry Hays as Aide-de-camp, at which position he was serving at the conclusion of the war.

James Marshall Higgins was my Great-Great-Great Grandfather. Wounded three times at Antietam, later returned to service only to be captured sometime in 1863.
