William Samuel Patton was Colonel of the 37th Mississippi. Formerly a Captain in the Mississippi Militia, he was elected as Lt. Col. by his troops then later promoted to the rank of Colonel of the 37th Regiment by appointment of President Jefferson Davis. The 37th Miss. served at Iuka, Corinth, Hattchie Bridge, Snyder's Bluff, Oxford, Saltillo, Baldwyn, Ripley, Abbeville, Vicksburg, Atlanta, GA and Franklin, TN. Col. Patton also served as Commandant of a fort at Columbus, MS.

Franklin A. Cross was a 2nd sergeant of Company A ' Patton's Company Mississippi Boys' of Clarke and Lauderdale counties 37th Miss. Inf.

Enlisted on Feb.8,1862 at Marion, Lauderdale Co.,MS. Was a Pvt. on Company A 37 MS. Inf. Detailed as a color bearer, captured on retreat from Corinth. MS 10-4-1862. In Jan. and Feb. of 1863 he was home sick. On Oct. 31, 1863 he is under arrest for desertion, captured near Kemmesaw Mountain, GA. Claims to have been loyal. Was forced to enlist to avoid Conscript )Draft) and deserted Rebel Army to avail himself of amnesty. Died Nov 22, 1864 near Camp Douglas(probably Chicago)of Small Pox.

Daniel was 27 years old from Lauderdale Co. Miss. He enlisted 12 Mar at Marion, Miss for the war sworn in by William S Patton. Fought at Corinth, Farmington, Vicksburg, Atlanta Campaign, Resca x2, Peach Tree Creek, Ezra Church, Jonesboro, Franklin and the Carolina Campaign. He was captured at Vicksburg 4 July 1863 and paroled 9 July. He suffered a flesh wound to his right arm near Atlanta & was given a wounded furlough.

William Fewox, son of John and Elizabeth Fewox, brother to Peter J, John, and Thomas J. He enlisted May 5,1862 at Enterprise, MS. On the roll of Prisoners at Vicksburg, MS he was captured July 4, 1863. He was again captured near Nashville, TN Dec 15, 1864. He was at Camp Douglas at Chicago IL in June 19, 1865.

Ezekiel enlisted at Enterprise, Mississippi on 2 April 1862. He is the husband of my relative Susan Elizabeth Thomas all of Jasper County Miss. He is captured at Rosaca, Georgia and sent to Camp Morton in Indiana. He died 29 March 1865 as a POW. If you are not aware of the commander of the norhtern prisons and the deliberate starvation policies enforced by him that led to the death of many of our men. Allowed by Lincoln and his administrative staff. Please look up a Col, Hoffman who was commander of the northern prison system.

Joined 'Patton's Army of 10,000' 1 Dec 1861 at 42 years of age; Shifted to 37th Mississippi Co. C 'Clarke Co. Rescuers' 13 Mar 1862 as Sargent. In hospital while company involved in Iuka and Corinth 8 Sep to 13 Oct 1862. Wounded in trenches slightly at Vicksburg, Snyder's Bluff and paroled 3 July, 1863. AWOL during time at parole camp in Enterprise, MS until Dec 1863 when 37th is reconstituted at Demopolis, AL. Appears on an undated list of men from the Vicksburg capture who have reported since 1 Apr 1864 tp parole camp in Demopolis, AL. Appears on a receipt roll for clothing at May Hospital in Augusta, GA dated 17 Oct 1864. Appears on PoW roll as a Private captured by Major General Thomas in Battle of Nashville 15 Dec 1864, transferred to Military Prison in Louisville, KY 20 Dec 1864 and transferred to Camp Douglas in Chicago IL 22 Dec 1864 where he dies 22 Jan 1865 of diarrhea. Originally buried grave number 556 Block 2 City Cemetery in Chicago, IL and reburied Oakwood Cemetery dedicated on 30 May 1895. A bronze plaque contains his name and rank as a Sargent once again.

Norvel was 22 years old when he joined as 4th Sgt. Capt Whitman C Turner's Co. [ Enterprise Tigers ] at Enterprise Mississippi on 7 March 1862. Wounded and captured at Vicksburg. Exchanged 20 Dec. 1863 and rejoined his unit. He died in Temple, Bell County Texas in 1909.

It was popular for babies to be named for presidents at the time during America's first century. Naturally many of the veterans of military age in the Confederate States Armed Forces shared names like John Q Adams or John Tyler. President Polk was highly regarded in the South and as it was in Choctaw County Alabama where my great great grandfather was from. He and his two brothers and other close relatives served together in the Enterprise Tigers, Company D of the 37th Mississippi. The three brothers were captured at the battle of Nashville, December 16, 1864. They are my bravest in my heritage.

Born in 1847 John B Tims is the youngest of the three sons John and Jane Creag Knight Tims gave to the defense of Alabama and the Confederate States. Though brother William Jackson was killed in cold blood in the cold Camp Douglas, James and John survived by miracle. Following the war they'd seen enough of 'reconstruction' in Alabama and John and James moved their families to East Texas. Today their line of the Tims name continues on in Texas. Their descendents remember the service of John, William, and James Tims and we will never forget why it is we are proud to remember.

Was born and raised in Choctaw County, Alabama yet served with volunteers out of Mississippi, the Enterprise Tigers (or Company D 37th MISS). Brothers John and James Tims also from Alabama served in same company. The three survived the battle of Franklin only to be captured weeks later in General Hood's defeat at Nashville. The brothers boarded a train packed and rolling toward a dark place in American history, Camp Douglas. Barely a month before the end of the War Between the Confederate and United States William died from pneumonia. (An easy fate considering the Alabamian's Chicago winter exposure, malnutrition, and cruel interests of the camp commandant, Colonel Sweet. He was buried in the largest mass grave in North America, among six thousand other Southerns buried at Confederate Mound in South Chicago. Only his spirit would come home to wife Martha Mae.

William was born 1833 and died 1902 in Clarke County Mississippi. William and his wife Sarah are buried in Hephzibah Church Cemetery in Clarke County.

William Hilburn was my great-grandfather. He enlisted at Shubuta in March, 1862, was wounded at Corinth on December 3, recovered to join his company at Vicksburg, wounded there, and died in the hospital July 15, 1863. He is buried in the Soldiers Rest Confederate Cemetery, Vicksburg, MS.

William was born in 1829 in Alabama. He enlisted 5 May 1862 at DeSota, Miss. [DeSota Rifles] In Oct 1862 he is detailed as a Wagoner. He is captured and paroled at Vicksbug, Miss. He rejoined his unit and was captured again at Resca, Ga. and taken as POW to Louisville, Ky. and on to Camp Morton in Indiana. He was exchanged 4 March 1865.

Pvt needham H Temples Company E Shubuta Guards of Clarke County, 37th Infantry Regiment of Mississippi records shows he was IN HOSPITAL on the Aug - Oct 1862 report. The Nov - Dec 1862 shows...Died 20 October 1862 How did he die...Where did he die ? Any Help Please.

Was living in DeSoto, Clarke Co., MS with his wife, when he enlisted. Had 10 children before 1862. Served 3 years and ended up in Madison House Hosp. in Montgomery, AL. He died in 1892. His widow filed for a widow's pension in 1894. For more info, see manuscript #2066 dated March 21, 1863 (on file in the National Archives).

We believe that the A. J. Adams listed in this company is our Abner James, son of James and Margaret Adams of Marion Co SC and then Smith Co, MS. His brother Daniel A. Adams also in this company. A. J. was killed at the Battle of Peachtree Creek in Atlanta and probably buried there in the fields along the creek.

Born Marion Co, SC, son of James and Margaret Adams who came to Smith Co MS in 1848. Two older brothers in Co H, 16th MS. Daniel made it home and married Hester A. Royals and they lived in Smith Co, Amite Co, then settled in Meridian, Lauderdale Co. Daniel is buried at Sageville, MS.

My great, great grandfather enlisted in 1862 at the age of 15 and remained with the 37th until the surrender in 1865. He had three older brothers enlisted also one died at Camp Douglas as a POW. I can only imagine what he went through as a 15 year old boy.

John was born in Robeson Co NC, son of David Ward. They lived in Smith Co MS and he was in Co G, 37th Inf with his brother James Pinkney Ward, who was a lieutenant. John was married to Sarah Adams, who had two brothers in this company and two brothers in Co H, 16th MS. John and Sarah lived in Erath Co, Texas. Sarah is buried at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin in the Confederate section. It seems that John may be buried in Erath Co, TX where he died in 1898. His brother James died in Gonzales Co TX in 1920.

Vincent Kelley was my great great grandfather. He was from Jasper, County Mississippi. Any info would be appreciative.

John was born 26 April 1835 in Jasper County Miss. He enlisted 32 Mar 1862 at Garlandsville, Miss. in Co H. 37th Infantry. Enlisted by Capt. F.B. Loper. He saw action in the Corinth, Atlanta and Carolina Campaigns. He was in the Vicksburg Siege. He died 5 Nov 1914 in Rose Hill, Jasper Co. Miss and is buried at the Hopewell UMC in that place. He was the father-in-law of my 2nd cousin 4 x removed.

Born in Newton County, 2/9/42, William joined Company H, the Jasper Avengers, in May of 1862. He survived the war and spent his final years at the Confederate Old Soldier’s Home at Beauvoir in Biloxi where he died in November of 1920.

Wm. Henry Altman was listed as a Private in Co. I or Co. J in the 37th infantry. He was my 2nd great grand uncle (brother of James Thomas Altman) His tombstone has a UCV honor insignia (I can give you a URL of a picture of his headstone if you want).

Edward was born Jan 1827 in Mississippi. He enlisted 15 No 1863 at Enterprise, Mississippi for 3 years by Major Mervin. He has four cards in his archival file. On Feb 4th, 1864, during the Atlanta Campaign he is discharged by Civil Authority. In my 40 + years of researching my Confederate ancestors this is the first time I have encountered this type of discharge. No further information is given. He died 1 Oct 1916 in Lauderdale Co. Miss and is buried in the Calvert Cem. in that county.

I can’t find much information on John Parian Lockley who was married to Louisa Davis Lockley. Grover Cleveland Lockley was his son. If anyone has information on him please reach out to me. I would like to know who his parents are.

John Holland Mayatt was in Company I 'The McLemore Guards' out of Lauderdale County 37th. Miss. Infantry. Wounded at Corinth October 4, 1862.

Born: 03 Jun 1839 Died: 19 Mar 1918 Meridian, Lauderdale County, Mississippi Buried: Oak Grove Cemetery, Bonita, Lauderdale County, Mississippi Married: Mary Elizabeth Semmes on 27 Feb 1860, Lauderdale County, Mississippi Joshua McLemore enlisted in the 37th Mississipp Infantry Regiment, Company J for 3 years on April 23, 1862 at Marion, Lauderdale County, Mississippi. He was recorded 'absent from date of enlistment by authority of Captain - Expected 10th of May.' It was also annotated that he did return as planned. He was present for duty fom this point until September 28, 1862 when he was listed 'absent sick Saltille Hospital. He is recorded back with his regiment being promoted from 1st Sergeant to Brevet 2nd Lieutenant on Jan 27, 1863. On February 9, 1863 he is listed absent being sent to the hospital in Meridian, Mississippi. Released back to his regiment on April 30th he was present for duty juntil authorized leave on July 29, 1863. After his return from leave, he remained with his regiment November 19 that same year, Returning once again, he remained with his unit through August 31, 1864. While in the trenches near Atlant, Georgia, he tendered is resignation as 2nd Lt. of Company J, 37th Mississippi Infantry Regiment on August 9th 'on account of feeble condition of health as certified to by Surgeon's Certificaton.' He was 'suffering from chronic diarrhea and a tendency to pulmonary disease increased by hereditary influences' making him unfit for his current duties. His rsignation was accepted on August 14, 1864. He was listed 'absent with leave for 30-days on a Surgeon's certificate (Special Field Order #85 dated August 22, 1864).

James enlisted at Columbus Mississippi on 9 May 1862 for 3 years. Enlisted by Capt. Dantzlor. Only two events are noted on his CMR's. 29 Sept. 1862 he is sent to the hospital at Holly Springs and in Dec. 1863 he is absent on detached service. He served honorably thru the war.

Brother of my Gr-Gr-Grandfather Jonathon Anderson. One of five brothers that served the Confederacy, and one of three brothers that died during their service. Born in Jones County Mississippi in 1836. Enlisted in the 37th Mississippi Infantry Co. K on April 21, 1862 in Jasper County Mississippi. Company Muster Rolls show that he was in the hospital at Olalona Mississippi in October of 1862, and that he died on February 26, 1862 with no cause of death listed.

Brother of my Gr-Gr-Grandfather Jonathon Anderson, was born in Jones County Mississippi in 1832. Enlisted in the 37th Mississippi Co K on April 30, 1862 for a period of 'three years or the war'. He was one of five brothers that served the Confederacy, and one of three brothers that died during their service. The company Muster Roll for May thru August 1864 lists him as 'Absent. Wounded and Captured July 20, 1864' (This was the date of the Battle of Peachtree Creek just outside of Atlanta,Georgia, but family records say he was captured near Dalton, Georgia about 60 miles north of Atlanta). He was treated by the Union 2nd Division 20th Army Corps Hospital of the Army of the Cumberland for a gunshot wound and compound fracture to the right thigh. He was subsequently sent to U.S.A. General Hospital in Chattanooga Tennessee on July 28th where they amputated his leg to the thigh. He died on August 16, 1864 while in the hospital.

Would like to make contact with researchers interested in the Edwards men who fought in the Civil War from Marshall County, MS. Freelan Hison Edwards supposedly fought in the Battle of Resaca, was captured and imprisoned at Camp Morton, Indiana from May 22, 1864 until the end of the war.

Thomas J. Fewox was the son of John and Elizabeth Fewox, brother to William, Peter, and John Fewox. He was only 18 years old when he was killed. He enlisted April 11,1862 at Jones Mississippi and died August 29,1862 having served only 4 months.

Thomas was 29 years old when he enlisted on 9 May 1862 at Columbus, Mississippi. On 27 Sept he was sick in the hospital. 9 May 1864 he is wounded at Resaca and hospitalized. On 10 Dec 1864 he is captured neat Nashville and sent to Louisville, Ky. and five days later sent to Camp Douglas in Chicago, ILL. He is released on 6 June 1865 in bad health. He died in 1866. He was the husband of my 2nd cousin 4 x removed.

James A. Satterfield enlisted in the Civil War 31 Mar 1862 at Jasper Co., MS, in the 'Jasper Guards', later to become the 37th MS Infantry Regiment, Company K. He died, probably of disease, at Camp Enterprise, MS 10 Dec 1863, as a prisoner of war, waiting to be exchanged. When Vicksburg surrendered on the 4th, the paroles started on the 9th. I do not know what he was still in Camp Enterprise in Dec...guessing that he had a long illness or severe wound.
