1st Heavy Artillery Regiment

from Eaton, NH. Mustered in 9/2/1864. Mustered out on 6/15/1865 in DC. Died shortly afterwards.

William L.S. Tabor, who was born in Methuen, Mass., and a resident of Hampstead, N.H., had prior service in the 15th N.H. Inf. Rgt.--for which service he received the Congressional Medal of Honor. On 17 Oct. 1864, Pvt. Tabor was mustered-in to Federal service for one year along with the rest of Co. K of the 1st N.H. Heavy Artillery Regiment. This regiment served on garrison duty within the Defenses of Washington, D.C., until June 1865. On 15 Jun. 1865, most of the regiment mustered-out of Federal service; two companies of recruits, however, remained on duty in the Defenses of Washington during the summer of 1865. On 11 Sep. 1865, these last two companies of the 1st N.H. Heavy Artillery Regiment were mustered-out of Federal service, and returned home to N.H. NOTE: I regret to report that William L.S. Tabor was NOT my ancestor; but, because he is the only man from my hometown of Hampstead, N.H., to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor, I felt obligated to add his name to this registry.
