1st New Jersey Cavalry

Enlisted as a Private on 1 September 1861. Mustered in Company C, 1st Cavalry Regiment New Jersey on 3 September 1861. Transferred into Regiment U.S. Veteran Reserve Corps on 27 December 1864. Discharged from Regiment U.S. Veteran Reserve Corps on 20 February 1865.

I have extensive info, including a copy of an original tintype of Charles in uniform. I have copied much info from the National Archives including pay stubs etc. Charles enlisted in July 27, 1861 in Florence, NJ and was issued a horse. In August 1861 he was listed on the Muster Roll as Corporal. In 1863 he suffered sunstroke at the Plains in VA, fell off his horse, and was in the Camp of the Dismounted for a period of time. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1863. His term of service ended in July 1864 and he was discharged in VA. Later there is correspondence concerning his Invalid Pension (not due to 'vicious habits'). Joined 1st New Jersey Cavalry (Company F) September 17, 1864. Left service in May of 1865. Paid $33.00 for service less $16.00 for uniform. Physical description: 5'5' tall, dark hair & complexion, hazel eyes.

SERVED IN THE 1ST REGIMENT NJ CAVALRY 16TH VOLUNTEERS home was in southern new jersey.

Became Sergeant Jan 5, 1863 then re-enlisted. 2nd Lieut. Co. K Nov 1st, 1864 became Capt. of Co. M July 18, 1865.

Richard enlisted as a private with the 3rd NY Cav. but was transfered with all the rest of the New Jersey boys to the 1st New Jersery Cav. Co. G in early 1862. He was promoted through the ranks to 2nd Lt. of Co. I. He was wounded twice and taken prisoner at Brandy Station. Later released he was wounded at Appomatox on the day Lee surendered. He is mentioned in the book 'Ride to war' on page 262. After the war he became a judge and died from a lighting strike while walking home one night.

My Grandmothers uncle was a 2nd Lt. with the 1st NJ killed at Hawes Shoppe VA. I am looking for more information regarding the battle and him personally. I know his name appears on the NJ monument at Gettysburgh, but I don't know where he is buried.

My great grandfather enlisted Feb 4th 1864 (his 21st birthday)was discharged July of 1865. He lived at the time of his enlistment in Danbury Ct and died in Danbury Ct in 1911.I have his enlistment and pay records At this web page http://homepage.mac.com/cfinnegan/PhotoAlbum53.html

Enlisted as a Major on 21 September 1861 at the age of 20. Commissioned in 1st Cavalry Regiment New Jersey on 10 October 1861. Discharged on 18 February 1862 at Washington, DC.
