40th New Jersey Infantry

Jacob is my Great Grandfather. He was born ca. 1840 in France. After the war, he moved to Kings County (Brooklyn)NY. One of his 2 sons, Conrad is my Grandfather. Conrad Smithlin's daughter Lillian was my Mother. Jacob Smithlin is buried in the Cypress Hills National Cemetery in Brooklyn, N.Y. Section 2, Site 5017.

Served as a Private in the 40th Regiment New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, Company E, enlisting on 27 Jan 1965 and was listed as Deserted on 29 July 1965 at Augur U S Army General Hospital in Alexandria VA - although the unit is said to have mustered out on 13 July 1965.
