Thomas enlisted on 17 October 1862 at age 45 and was mustered into L Company, 6th New York Heavy Artillery on 21 February 1862. He participated in the following battles fought by his Regiment: Manassas Gap on 24 July 1863 White Plains on 26 July 1863 Culpepper on 11 October 1863 Warrenton on 26 October 1863 the Wilderness on 6-7 May 1864 Spotsylvania Court House battles on 10, 12 and 19 May 1864 Thomas was captured on 19 May 1864 and subsequently died at Andersonville Prison, Georgia on 23 August 1864. During the Spotsylvania Court House battles the 6th NYHA was detailed as Infantry to the Artillery Reserve. He is buried in grave #6601 at Andersonville National Cemetery.
