He enlisted on 27 Sept 1862 into Company U, 55th Infantry Regiment NY; transferred 3 Dec 1862 to Company H, 38th Infantry Regiment NY; transferred 3 Jun 1863 to Comany A, 40th Infantry Regiment New York; died of disease 9 Jul 1863 Frederick, MD. Buried 10 Jul 1863 at Antietam, Headstone #246, Sect 25, Lot F. Grave #668, Frederick, MD.

John was wounded at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. He was born in Ireland and enlisted in Massachusetts. His father's name was Patrick and he was from County Mayo.

Thomas was killed in action December 13, 1862 at the battle of Fredricksburg. I have been told that there is an entry for him in the Adjutant-General of New York's 1900 annual report, which lists all the casualties of the 40th NY Infantry, but I have been unable to locate this document. After talking to a staff historian at the park, I'm sure that he is more than likely buried in the National Military Park at Fredricksburg And Spotsylvania, although he is buried in an unmarked grave due to the massive number of Union casualties in that battle.
