46th New York Infantry

Age 24, Enlisted at New York City, to serve three years, Mustered in as Private, Co E, August 27, 1861; Captured in Action, March 31,1862 at Wilmington Island Ga. paroled, October 19, 1862 at Aikens Landing, Va. Discharged, September 15, 1864, near Weldon Railroad, Va.

Fought alongside Father: Ferdinand Hofele who died at the Battle of Secessionville June 16, 1862

Born in Stutgart, Germany in 1818, came to US 1854 with his family. He served with his son of the same name. He was killed at the Battle of Secessionville, St. James Island, South Carolina on June 16, 1862. I am trying to find out where he is buried, any help would be appreciated.

Philip Kupferschmidt was my maternal great-grandfather. I have his original discharge, dated July 28, 1865. It shows his enlistment date as January 4, 1864, but this is really the date of his re-enlistment--original enlistment was July, 1861*, when the regiment was first recruited by Colonel Rosa. *Per National Archives.

Born in Sulzbach, Bavaria about 1828.Served in the last year of the war.Was married to Barbara Olemann, born about 1831 in Darmstadt, Germany. Died in the Soldier''s Home in Bath, New York in 1897
