Reuben enlisted as a Private on 10 Oct 1861 at the age of 21. He was mustered in on 11 Oct 1861 in Company E, 93rd Infantry Regiment and reelisted on 15 December 1863. He received a disability discharge on 19 Dec 1864 in Washington, DC. Among the battles in which he participated was the Battle of the Wilderness where he was wounded.
