42nd Ohio Infantry

Samuel S. Shattuck, 42nd Ohio Regiment, Company A This is my father-in-laws Grandfather. We have a photo of the regiment with a riverboat in background. He served with his dog 'Jack.' We have discharge papers for the dog. Does anyone have any photos of this regiment and company?

Andrew Uttz (Utz) died in 1915 at the old soldier's home in Levnworth, KS. Middle son of John & Nancy Utz (Ohio) Andrew lived in Fort Worth, TX after the war. He was father of Frank (my grandfather) & William Uttz. Some records show Andrew buried in Fort Worth. His grave however is at Levenworth.

Jonathan died of wounds received at the Battle of Chickasaw Bay and of dysentery. He was on a river boat from Vicksburg, MS and died 20 miles from Cairo, IL where his body was taken ashore and buried.

Enlisted as a Private on 19 September 1861 at the age of 20. Mustered in Company G, 42nd Infantry Regiment Ohio on 27 November 1861. Promoted to Full Corporal on 3 April 1862. Promoted to Full Sergeant on 17 August 1863. Promoted to Full 1st Sergeant on 5 July 1864. Mustered out on 2 December 1864 at Columbus, OH.

Drafted in Company H, 42nd Infantry Regiment Ohio on 08 October 1862. Mustered out Company H, 42nd Infantry Regiment Ohio on 06 July 1863.

Enlisted as a Private in Company H, 42nd Infantry Regiment Ohio on 11 August 1862. POW on 12 May 1863 at Raymond, MS; Exchanged on 23 October 1863 Transferred Company H, 42nd Infantry Regiment Ohio on 18 November 1864 Transfered in Company E, 96th Infantry Regiment Ohio on 18 November 1864. Mustered out Company E, 96th Infantry Regiment Ohio on 07 July 1865 in Mobile, AL.

Widow applied for pension 1 September 1865; may have died during the war.

Also served in company 'B'.

Served with his brother also in companies 'B' and 'K'.
