77th Ohio Infantry

Thomas Grim, Jr. served with his brothers Armstrong,Frederick and Charles in Company A. Their father was also in the 77th. A number of their Buskirk kinsmen were in the 77th as well as many neighbors and friends. The Grim boys were captured at Marks Mills in Arkansas and spend ten months in Camp Fort Prison where Armstrong died. Their father later died by his own hand in camp at Little Rock after the long, wet march back to saftey. Charles died within weeks of his release from Ford. I've written a narrative account of the family.

Mustered out of service Brownsville,Texas his age approximately 46 yrs. He returned to his home at Lowell,Ohio.

Enlisted as a Private on 20 Feburary 1864 at the age of 44. Was captured at the battle of Mark's Mills on 25 April 1864. Was sent to Camp Ford in Tyler Texas where he died on 11 October 1864. He is buried at Alexandria National Cemetery, in Pineville LA, section A site 1230

Garrett enlisted on 2/20/1864. He was captured on 4/25/1864 at the Battle of Marks Mills, Arkansas. He was a prisoner of war for 10 months at Camp Ford in Tyler Texas. John VanFleet of the same regiment and company is his brother

John enlisted on 12/13/1861. In 1864 he renlisted as a veteren. On 4/25/1864 he was missing at the Battle of Marks Mills, Arkansas and presumed dead. Garrett VanFleet of the same regiment and company is his brother.

This brave barrelmaker lied about his age to join: he was over 50, and fought beside his own 17-year-old son Elijah Simeon Hall in the battle of Shiloh. He later rejoined the regiment and somehow evaded capture in the disaster at Marks Mills. His memory is beloved unto his children, whom he left a good inheritance.

We are proud to remember this soldier as our direct forefather, maimed for life in the battle of Shiloh when an exploding shell blasted his shoulder with a crater the size of a silver dollar. Who of us can say where the spirit of a brave man goes?

My great grandfather Divers B. McElwee was in companies D and H. His brother Burton D. (Budd) McElwee was also in these units.

Nathan was born in Morgan Co., O. He was slightly wounded three times at Shiloh. He developed malaria during the seige of Corinth, MS. He recovered, rejoined his unit and was captured 25 Apr 1864 at Mark's Mill, Ark., spending the next 10 months at Camp Ford prison in Tyler, Tex. After the war he lived in Montgomery Co., Ill., DeWitt County, Iowa and Sumner Co., Kan, where he died in 1916. His body was returned to Morgan Co., Ohio for burial at Mt. Olivet Cem.
