William married a Virginia girl, Martha Shoup, and settled in Johnstown, PA following the war. He was working as a night watchman at the Gautier Steel Works on May 31, 1889 when he was overcome by floodwaters from the great Johnstown flood. He is buried in the Civil War Circle at Grandview Cemetery in Johnstown. Martha died 1n 1918. William's daughter Harriett Retallack (1869-1941) is my gret-grandmother.
