4th Pennsylvania Infantry

When formed, the members of this unit enlisted for 6 months. The morning of the first day of the Battle of Bull Run, the men's enlistment's were over. They were in the trenches at Manassas, ready for battle and refused to fight. The Commander begged the men to fight, but it was voted not to extend the enlistment. The men left the trenches, boarded trains and returned to their home. The commander, Col John F Hartranft, stayed on, won the Medal of Honor for his actions, became a General and later becamse the Gov of PA, but always felt dishonored and betrayed by these men. Adam Reed was discharged and immediately enlisted with his brother in the 72nd.

Henry is my paternal grandmother's great uncle. Later he re-enlisted with the 51st PVI, Co. D

Died of camp fever a month after enlisting. Became very ill in camp and thus boarded into a hotel for better care but died shortly after. One of his brothers traveled south to recover his body.

My 3rd great-grandfather Enlisted on Apr 19, 1861 in Pennsylvania as a Private into Co. H, 4th Pa Infantry. On July 27, 1861 he was mustered out at Harrisburg, PA. Re-enlisted on Aug 7, 1862 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. On Aug 13, 1862 mustered in as a Private into Co. C, 125th Pa Infantry. He was wounded at Antietam. On May 18, 1863 he was mustered out at Harrisburg, PA. He is listed on this website under the 125th pa Infantry, but i added him along time ago and don't remember the password.
